Decided not to use the report card format tonight and just throw out some random observations on tonight's game, the team and the season. If you're curious, the overall effort was about a "B+". Rangers played hard for the full 60 for a change and the flow of the game was very even against a team that's supposed to be their far superior.

Speaking of tonight's game, it was easily the most entertaining of the season. Non-stop action, great saves, excellent hitting, after whistle scrums and two teams that don't like each other at all. I'm going to watch it again on the replay tonight, just for the entertainment value.

Another thing that added to the game was the crowd tonight. I've been tough on the MSG crowd this season but they were excellent tonight, easily the loudest they've been all season.

Richard Lintner and Joel Bouchard, both "A-" each. Not just for the goals they scored, but both played very good all-around games.

Speaking of defensemen, Cory Cross' first game as a Ranger: Fine. Good, even.

Speaking again of defensemen, Devils first goal, put a lot of the blame on Dave Karpa for not getting the puck out of the zone along the wall about 20 seconds before the goal. Also, early in the 3rd Elias made Karpa look flat out stupid with a one on one move and almost scored on that. Karpa is just terrible, but I'm sure I didn't have to tell you that.

If Jamie Lundmark keeps playing like this, how long until he goes back to Hartford? And how many people will be complaining this time? I'm all for Jamie Lundmark, but, look, he's done absolutely nothing in either of his regular season stints with the team. And this stint is actually worse than his first so far. Granted, tonight was a very tough game for a rookie with it's very fast pace and relentless pressure, but Lundmark was honestly bad tonight. His reflexes and instincts don't look on par for the NHL level yet. His passes aren't connecting, he's getting the puck stolen from him and really isn't contributing anything else to the game.

Radek Dvorak, after being called out by his coach: Pretty much the same. Maybe he hustled a little more, but what was the difference? He still didn't go to the net, still looked for easy passes instead of making the play himself. I don't think Dvorak has the edge to be a good player in the league. He's too much of a happy-go-lucky, want to score pretty goals but don't want to get hurt, "I'm just here, don't mind me" kind of guy. And this is how he's avoided the harsh criticism he deserves most of his career - Occasional flashes of talent, a hint of promise and a friendly, agreeable attitude. That might make him good to have as a buddy, but it almost never works as a hockey player.

Have you ever seen a team more disorganized on a 3-on-2 rush than the Rangers? They seem to have absolutely no clue what to do or where their teammates will be.

Despite now having a 1-2-1 record, Mike Dunham has been excellent. Not a bad goal against yet. Everything he's been able to see, he's stopped. Seems like every goal against him so far has been from a breakdown, missed assignment or soft checking by the Rangers defense within 10 feet of the net. Oh, by the way, Dunham outplayed Brodeur tonight by a decent margin.

Another testament to Trottier's lack of instinct, with about 6 minutes left in the 3rd, Messier got up very slowly and was flexing his leg. So who do you think was out there on a very crucial defensive zone draw with about 12 seconds left?

The Devils have the best penalty kill I've seen by any team this season, easily. That's the perfect and textbook way to kill a penalty - constant pressure on the puck carrier, stand up at the blueline, be nasty in the crease and don't worry about the SH goals, just clear the puck out.

Eric Lindros has been playing great for two plus weeks now. So, he didn't score tonight, but he must've knocked 5 Devils to the ice.

How obvious is it that the Rangers lie about injuries to their star players? Unless you're telling me that Bure's mild knee injury in the pre-season that kept him out of the last week and a half actually turned into a week long flu at the beginning of the season, and now Brian Leetch's "bruised foot" is one of those "wacky" bruised foot injuries that keep a player out of the lineup for over a month? On MSG tonight they said they hope to expect Leetch back within two weeks! Folks, I'm no doctor, don't even play one on TV, but that's no bruised foot.

We'll take this tie. It was a fun game, both teams played hard for the full 60 minutes and the crowd was alive. Have a nice holiday, everyone.

By the way, Rangers 37th game this season? 2-2 tie with the Devils at MSG. Rangers 37th game last season? 2-2 tie with the Devils at MSG.
