The Hit, The Draft and a Pack of Smokes
Sunday - June 08, 2003
I know, a lot of you are still coming up with different ways to describe Scott Stevens as being a dirty player. I have no problem taking the opposite point of view. Mean ? Yes....Nasty ? Hell yes. Hard hitting ? Of course. Dirty ? C'mon now. This is the NHL. If Mr. Stevens was going after peoples knees I wouldn't argue a bit. Scott hits with intent to ring the bell.....to take a guy out....OK, I'll agree. But that's not dirty in my book. And after all these years, if the players themselves thought he was dirty, then he'd have already paid for it. The fact that Paul Kariya came back and scored a big goal should not be overlooked here. I never gave the guy much credit for being tough....I do now. If you are that bothered by the Stevens hit.....you'll have baseball to watch all summer....nice boring baseball. We are very happy to announce that our interview with Evan Jansen, pro scout is here for your enjoyment. There's a lot of great stuff in there....take your time. You'll read about scouting, the Rangers current crop of D-men and who they are looking at in the draft. Thanks to greatone from the boards for helping set this up ! Larry Brooks has his sunday article out....inside stuff on a bunch of teams. Speaking of Mr. Brooks, we posted our own rumor a few days ago and now it seems that everyone is reporting on a possible return to the NHL for Scotty Bowman. And yes, it's the Rangers that are being talked about as his team to coach. I don't know if this means that my source was correct or that a lot more people read Hockeybird than I thought. For the record, I still think of Slats himself as the man for the job, but I'd take Scotty. He's a proven winner and could possibly command enough respect from the guys to turn things around here quickly. When Detroit gets a call from Slats, that's when this becomes a serious possibility. The Daily News is crying about Chris "Mad Dog" Russo giving a hard time to Mike Milbury. It's true, the Dog trashed Milbury in a caustic interview....but I'd hardly cry about it. I'm going to take my kids to see some animated fish movie......oh happy day. I need a smoke eh ! ----}- Bird Posted by Bird at June 08, 2003 10:38 AMeMail this entry! Comments
Bowman is sooooo intriguing a choice; I'd take him instantly, but only if he gets carte blanche. Would this mean Messier returns if Scotty's aboard? I'm not so sure... and that would be a good thing. Posted by: Scott on June 8, 2003 11:27 AMBird, Did you read Newsday today? Claude Lapointe, Steve Webb and even Peca had negative things to say about Laviolette. Milbury may not be as bad as everyone thought. Steven's hit was late. Posted by: mhurley on June 8, 2003 02:00 PMPost a comment
