One Last Shot
Wednesday - July 02, 2003

With the announcement of Sather's keeping the coaching slot (not that it's impossible he gives the job to someone else later) we are setting up what could be a last chance shot at a playoff run in the coming season. All the hockey world expects a work stoppage at some point.....and it could be a long one. So, fasten your seat belts......here we go !

Newsday - Sather tried to quash a number of rumors, chief among them a report out of Canada that he was about to buy out the final year of Eric Lindros' contract and place No. 88 on waivers. The Rangers had until midnight last night to buy out Lindros for $2.2 million, or two-thirds of his base salary; they can still buy him out, but from today forward it would be for the full $3.3 million. Lindros can earn $6 million more by playing 75 games this season.

Daily News - "The way I went into the end of (last) season was with the plan of getting into the playoffs," Sather said. "We didn't do it. So I always had this feeling in the back of my mind that I left the job incomplete. I'd like to be able to finish that."

NY Post - The Post has learned that Sather has identified energetic former Edmonton center Todd Marchant as his primary target. It's believed the Blueshirts have interest as well in defensemen Sean Brown and Ken Klee, late of Boston and Washington, respectively.

NY Times - For once, the Rangers do not seem to be in a hurry to throw money at this summer's top free agents. That does not mean the Rangers will abstain from reopening Cablevision's vaults.

More Times - Of course, this cost-cutting could come on a double-edged sword. If too many teams behave the same way at the same time, the N.H.L. Players Association might charge them with collusion to restrain the market artificially, an accusation that is easier to make than to prove.

HockeyRodent.com - So Bird phones me a few hours ago to alert me to TSN's reports regarding Mark Messier and Eric Lindros.

More HockeyRodent.com - Besides, by delaying the selection of a new head coach until after the lockout, Slats may have access to a better suite of candidates... so why lock up a "compromise" choice now just for the sake of moving back to the press box?

Slam completely ignores the Rangers.....not that I'm complaining.

I'm sorry about the confusion yesterday. When major outlets like TSN or Sportsnet report....I trust 'em. They are not rumor sites. Well, I guess both sites qualify for Hockeybirds AssClown of the day.

I wonder when the signings will begin......., "The suspense is terrible.....I hope it will last" - Wille Wonka
