Bye Bye Larry
Sunday - August 10, 2003

I have never pulled punches when it comes to NY Post columnist, Larry Brooks. But at least the guy writes......and now that we've spoken with him, I know of his passion for the game. So when I read todays "Slap Shots" I was both happy and sad. "Finally, see you in September." Those are the last words in today's article. I'm happy in that I won't have to read about some outlandish trade rumor in the next few weeks. I'm sad in that we may not have much of anything to read at all......I'm torn.

Well, I hope Larry has a great vacation. It doesn't matter if you like his columns or not.....he gets you to read them and THAT is the trick that escapes the other Ranger beat writers. Oh sure....I know how hard it is to write about a team that hasn't seen the playoffs since the Clinton administration because we try and do that here. And I believe that all the local writers have a tough job because of that. But Larry, he gets us to react.....and I salute him for that.

Now a writer who is never putting forth "un-named sources" but is always entertaining is our very own Hockey Rodent. He now has added parts 3 and 4 to his mini series on the older players in the NHL. What better way to spend a Sunday than kicking back and reading the Rodent ?

I'm sure there may be another link or two out there if I really tried looking....but I'm not going to bother. Chris should bring you the news tomorrow so I'll either see ya on the boards....or right here on Tuesday.

Bird,,glad to see you come around on Uncle Larry...for my money he's the best in the business. You called it, Brooks gets you to react while the others just rehash old SLAM articles. Dellapina only writes interesting stuff for his FACEOFF articles, and Sherry Ross is pointless. I commend Brooks for sticking his nose out with his sources. I believe every word of it to tell you the truth, because larry is in deep with a lot of people around the NHL. And show me ONE other writer around her who consistently hammers Slats like Larry..Just ONE! He has been feraless in his attacks of Sather and I think he's just beginning. Never Mind mess and Lindros.

Keep it coming Larry. Going to be a LOOOOOONG three weeks without the ever entertaining SLAPSHOTS to accompany me for my 'private time' the next few Sunday mornings..

Dmill I take then you haven't read Rich Carpiniello who was bashing Slats way before it was considered in vogue. Nor do I believe you have read Tom Gulliti, Bridget Wentworth or even Arthur Staples all who use the news and events to bash Slats not unlike Brooks who will change his tune the moment Slats makes a move he likes.

Sorry Bird but let us be honest here. Brooks gets a reaction not because he offers something of value like a true reporter but because he goes for the stuff that typically isn't.

His use of the unnamed "Slap Shot" sources as his way of trying to make some of his more outlandish rumors look legit actually take away from his passion.

He can offer all the passion for the game he wants but that doesn't give him any sort of credibility as a writer.

If anything Brooks these days finds himself further away from the Ranger event loop which has been shown by Dellapina and Diamos both "getting the scoop" on Ranger events with Brooks not even coming close.

He can get all the reaction he wants but I find very few who consider him a reliable source of information.
