Question and answer
Wednesday - October 01, 2003
Star-Ledger: "Matthew Barnaby doesn't know whether the Rangers have made him available for Friday's waiver draft." NY Post: "...Sather made the decision to protect the 10-year veteran [Barnaby] who last year was the only Ranger to exceed expectations." He knows now. The Daily News also confirms Barnaby's protected status. According to Uncle Larry, it's Ronald Petrovicky whom the Rangers decided to expose for the Waiver Draft on Friday. If true, you have to wonder why they didn't leave a "ringer" out there - a player no team would likely touch based on their combination of age, salary and performance - like a Mark Messier or Vladimir Malakhov. The mystery will be settled sometime this afternoon as the NHL releases the protected lists for all thirty teams. It's already been reported that Curtis Joseph will be available. Speaking of the Waiver Draft, the Rangers picked up Jeff Heerema and Shawn Heins from the waiver wire yesterday, perhaps as "padding" for the aformentioned Waiver Draft. "Padding"? Allow the Rodent to explain it for you. Actually, he calls it "backfill", but I like the term "padding" better, myself. "Backfill" makes Jeff Heerema and Shawn Heins sound like peat moss. The Devils visit the Rangers for pre-season game number seven of nine tonight. The game will be on the MSG Network at 7pm. - Rocha Posted by pete at October 01, 2003 04:45 AMeMail this entry!
