Mike
Dunham
#30, G
|
1/30 |
A- |
Needed to have a good 1st period and he did. Nothing
highlight reel but looked sharp, especially with directing his rebounds
away from traffic. See Poti's column for a longer description of
Carolina's goal, one which I don't know if I should discredit Dunham on
or not. Later in the 2nd made the save of the game with a stacked pad
stop on a breaking 'Cane, score still 1-1 at the time. Could've been an
entirely different game if Dunham didn't pull that one out. Also made a
few very nice ones in the 3rd to keep the 'Canes down. As steady as you
could ask for tonight. Named 3rd Star.

Greg de
Vries
#4, LD
|
16:24 |
C- |
Okay, after a good few
opening games he quieted down, now he's even starting to play poorly at
times. Carolina's first goal de Vries seemed to be left behind in the
corner after a puck battle. 2nd period, bad pass just outside his
blueline caused a mini-break that Dunham had to make a great save on.
Lost the puck along the boards again in the 2nd which led to a good
Carolina chance.
|
Tom Poti
#3, RD
|
21:56 |
B |
I need to see the replay
of Carolina's first goal a few more times because I can't really tell
what happened. Poti was there, swiped at the puck... but... I don't
know. Did it ever get to O'Neill in front of the net? Did Poti flub the
clearing attempt? I can't tell. Am I the only one who thinks his
defense has been much, much better this season? In fact, he's been
downright GOOD defensively. The offense has been pretty absent, though.

Vladimir
Malakhov
#23, LD
|
20:13 |
B+ |
He was having a pretty brutal 1st period with several
flubs until he made the play that caused Carter's SH goal. Malakhov got
the puck and patiently glided towards the goalie waiting for Carter to
get open, he did, Malakhov hit him with the cross-crease pass for the
tap-in. Nice play. Him and Bobo had a very productive night, each
ending up with a +3.

Boris Mironov
#29, RD
|
18:41 |
B |
Boris has been awfully
quiet this season. Solid, but quiet. I miss the hits. +3.

Darius
Kasparaitis
#6, LD
|
15:46 |
B- |
Missed a hip check along the blueline boards which
sent Carolina on a 2-on-1 that Bouchard had to cover up. He's still the
weak link on this defense, but he's not playing that badly.
|
Joel Bouchard
#74, RD
|
21:02 |
B+ |
Very nice play 1st
period sliding to block a 2-on-1 centering pass. Covered up for a few
more mistakes, too. Really has settled down into the solid, dependable
Bouchard we saw last season.

Petr
Nedved
#93, C
|
24:39 |
B+ |
Very tough 1st period. One time had the puck over a
sprawled out Weeks and just shot it right over the top with the upper
3/4ths of the net open. Then with 10 seconds left and Nedved with the
space to wind up for a wrister, missed the net completely. Redeemed
himself in the 2nd period by scoring on the PP - shot into the goalie
but followed up his shot and put the rebound in. Led the team with 5
shots and logged a whopping 24:39, a hell of a lot of ice time for a
forward.

Jan Hlavac
#37, LW

C+ |
Not as noticable or
aggressive as he's usually been.
|
Alexei
Kovalev
#27, RW
|
23:18 |
B+ |
Really looking good right now. Seems confident with
the puck to the point where almost no one can take it away from him.
Getting lots of shots off, good passing, no major mistakes... I'll take
a disciplined 60 point Kovalev over an error-prone 80 point one. 4
shots.
|
Bobby Holik
#16, C
|
21:35 |
B |
Fiesty game. Nothing
particular really stood out but usually seemed to have a glove in the
face or a stick in the ribs. Was matched against Brind'Amour most of
the night and did a very nice job at it. The whole line did, really.

Martin
Rucinsky
#26, LW
|
17:29 |
B- |
Drew at least one power play, perhaps two. Skated and
played well enough, though not one of the more prominent Rangers.
|
Anson Carter
#22, RW
|
19:10 |
B+ |
That's why I like
Carter. He FINALLY scores in the 1st period, only his second goal as a
Ranger in 20-some games and Carter was so thrilled he punched the air
hard enough to knock all it's teeth out. You've gotta like that.
Slowly, he's getting better every game. A goal, +2 and 2 shots is a
nice night.
|
Mark
Messier
#11, C
|
18:48 |
B |
A replay showed him grabbing his neck in the 1st
period. Oh good God, not the neck AGAIN! At least he still has the
smarts, as demonstrated on his great screen during the Rangers second
goal. Also connected in the 3rd on a great pass from Lundmark, and,
hey, Messier didn't flub it! Honestly it's not that he's playing that
badly, his strength and stamina limitations are just very frustrating.
He would have about 5 goals and 10 points by now with a 10-year younger
body.
|
Chris Simon
#17, LW
|
3:35 |
B |
Got nailed with a
totally bogus boarding call and ejection in the 1st period. Clearly hit
Cole from the side and with elbows and forearms down. Sigh. However,
this does make Simon, who was already leading the league with 47 PIM's,
way out in front now with 62. Rock on with your bad ass self, Mr. Simon!
|
Matthew
Barnaby
#36, RW
|
11:05 |
B |
Well, he did draw a 4min. power play by taking a
nasty stick to the nose... and that's all he did tonight. JD was raving
about Barnaby's forechecking on the Rangers fourth goal, but honestly
all I saw was Barnaby skate into the corner and fall down. Maybe I
missed something.(?)
LATE UPDATE: The pass on goal #4 I gave Lundmark credit for was
actually Barnaby's pass, and a beautiful one it was. Barnaby's grade
moves up from a C+ to a B.
|
Jamie Lundmark
#21, C
|
16:40 |
A- |
That's
the way to do it. Never mind your draft position or prior history,
you're guaranteed nothing when you come to the NHL and have to make a
name for yourself all over again. For one of the few nights in his
Ranger career, Lundmark seemed to understand that tonight. He skated
hard, made some hits, kept the play moving and even scored a goal by
smartly putting it on net from a bad angle when there were no other
options. Put the game
away in the 3rd by coming out of the corner with the puck and making a
beautiful pass to a streaking Messier. EXCELLENT game. Finally,
for the first time in what seems like forever I have some genuine great
things to say about Lundmark tonight. Deservedly first star of the game.

Dan
Lacouture
#39, LW
|
2:56 |
C |
If this keeps up I'm going to start renting out
Lacouture's column for classified ads like I used to do with Sylvain
Lefebvre's column. So if you have a job you need filled, want to sell
your fish tank or are looking for a date, keep this space in mind. Low
rates.
...And then he gets in a meaningless fight at the end of the game just
so I have to write something! He must've sensed his column was going up
for grabs. Very sneaky, Lacouture. Good for him, though. He knows his
status on this team is very tenuous and did something late with a 4-1
lead to be noticed.

PERIOD: |
|
B- |
A pretty ugly period salvaged by a late Carter goal.
Rangers controlled the play for the first 5-7 minutes but it was mostly
Carolina after that. The power play looked even worse. In fact, they
had a 4min. PP without a single shot! They also took two minors and a
major in the period, all were touchy calls, though. Carolina had the
shots by 11-5! Rangers really earned about a "D+" this period, but
hell, when you come out of the period with a 1-0 lead...
|
| 2nd PERIOD: |
|
B+ |
Mirror image of the 1st,
except for the goal scoring. Pretty badly outplayed in the beginning of
the period but then dominated the final 12-15 minutes. And, hey, THEY
SCORED ON THE POWER PLAY! I'll take the goal yet shed a tear for the
record of not scoring a PP goal from the beginning of the season that
the Rangers were so close to. Shots were 11-6 Rangers.
|
| 3rd
PERIOD: |
|
B |
Strong period. Carolina had maybe two or three
serious scoring chances while the Rangers seemed to enjoy their
multiple goal lead and tried to pour it on. Shots were 11-8 for the
'Canes, but it really didn't look like it.
|
| OVERALL: |
|
B+ |
Let's
look at some positives: Last season they also started out 2-2-2, lost
their next game and only got back to .500 for ONE night the rest of the
season. This time they got right back to even the very next game. They
also just completed their longest homestand of the season with what was
essentially a 4-2 record (3-1-2), and you can't hope for much better
than a .667 home winning percentage. .667 at home, .500 on the road and
you're not only in the playoffs easily, but challenging for the
top spot. So, all in all, as good a homestand as we could've reasonably
wanted, ESPECIALLY considering Lindros missed 3 of those games and
Leetch all of them.
As for this game in particular, the Rangers really got lucky in the 1st
period but picked it up about halfway through the game and carried the
play the rest of the way. The solid defense is still there - few
mistakes and shots (and bodies) are being kept to the outside - while
finally the offense seems to be coming around. Actually, though, I'm
not sure how much better they played tonight compared to Tuesday night
against the Ducks, if they played any better at all. The only
difference was Dunham was sharper and the breaks went the Rangers way
this time.
