Was not prepared for the first
goal that beat him. A pass from the side of the net to a 'Cane in the
left slot who had a few Rangers between him and Jussi, so he never
seemed to see the shot coming that easily slipped between his legs.
Second goal was from a scramble out front on the PP, another one Jussi
seemed to lose at some point. Ain't lookin' quite so studly tonight.
Faced a ton of work in the 2nd, only let one though. And... y'know
what? It's about 10 minutes after the game right now, I still have a
ton of crap to type so I'm not going to recount the remainer of his
goals against. Let's just say while it was the whole team that stunk,
Jussi was no marvel himself. |

Brian Leetch

A few classic keep-ins
from the PP point. Had a very active final two minutes of the 1st, a
slick over-the-stick pass to Rucinsky for a goal, then took a penalty
for a can opener on Cole about 30 seconds later. Him and de Vries were
actually a +1 on the night until that empty netter at the very end.

Greg de Vries
#4, RD
|
18:52 |
B- |
Nothing I'm going to
write my Mom about, but Greg was decent enough tonight. Yes, he did get
lost a few times that I noticed, but he was also on for 2 goals for
while only 1 against, and ya can't really argue with that. |
Vladimir
Malakhov
#23, LD
|
22:34 |
D |
Him and his buddy Bobo stunk tonight. No glaring
mistakes from either, and they weren't necessarily lazier than any
other d-pairing, but they each ended up with a -3 while Leetch/De Vries
and Kaspar/Bouchard were even! So, obviously, the smell is coming from
here.

See Malakhov's column
about the -3's. By the way, those three goals against Vlad and Bobo
were on for were Carolina's final three goals (besides the EN), which
makes it even a bit more annoying. |

Two minor penalties. Both were definitely on the
touchy side as the officiating really stunk tonight. Nothing can make a
game more dull than an endless series of picky minor penalties.

Joel spelled backwards
is "Leoj". Facintaing, huh? Yeah, obviously I have nothing to say here.

Holik

|
17:47 |
B- |
Not a very bright penalty with about 5 left in the
1st and Carolina having taken the momentum at that point, and thanks to
Holik's penalty, the lead. Holik was checking a 'Cane but wrapped his
arms around the player and tried to bend him over the bench face first.
I've certainly seen worse, but this was unnecessary. Regardless, he
played a decent enough game and had 4 shots. Not like this line was
stellar or anything, but at least not a complete disaster.
|
Martin Rucinsky
#26, LW
|
16:33 |
B |
Leetch probably deserves
more credit on Rucinsky's goal than Martin does, but he did time the
deflection nicely. Finished with 2 shots and a +1, which tonight is
kind of like getting in a train wreck and finding a gold bar while
picking yourself out of the wreckage.
|
Anson
Carter
#22, RW
|
16:51 |
B- |
He looked decent at first, skating hard, but then
someone must've given him the word that the plan was to be a bunch of
lazy slobs tonight and Carter fell in line soon enough. Still, though,
like his linemates didn't have a terrible game and managed to somehow
escape with a +1.
|
Petr Nedved
#93, C
|
18:59 |
C |
Made a nice (and
surprising) steal of the puck in the neutral zone and got two shots
off, then maybe 20 seconds later dropped the puck off to Kovalev for
his goal. 4 shots in the 1st period alone. Later in the 2nd let his
check get position on him without putting up enough of a fight, which
allowed him the freedom to put a rebound in. Had a whopping 9 shots but
also an equally large -3. So, yeah, both good and bad tonight,
obviously.
By the way, I've read opinions on some other messageboards (not
Hockeybird) this week how Lundmark should replace Nedved permanently on
this line. Yo, fools! Nedved almost had more shots on goal tonight than
Lundmark has in all 12 games this season! Put the frickin' bong down,
Toe Blake.

Jan
Hlavac
#37, LW
|
11:19 |
B |
Penalty shot, 3rd period - small dekes with the stick
right/left, right/left - the second one opened Weekes' legs and Hlavac
put it through quickly. Nice. No idea WHY he got a penalty shot, but
what the hell. The officiating was abosultely miserable tonight. And
for some very odd reason, while his linemates were both a -3 each,
Hlavac escaped with an even rating. He gets the dubious honor of being
the best Ranger tonight in this crapstorm of a game.
|
Alexei Kovalev
#27, RW
|
21:57 |
C |
Took a drop pass from
Nedved in the offensive zone, skated to the wing for some room and
RIPPED a laser wrist shot into the upper near corner. Beautiful. The
kind of goal you used to see a whole lot more of 10-20 years ago. But,
like his fellow linemate Nedved, even though most of the offense was
coming of their two sticks, their defensive coverage was atrocious.
Another -3.

Mark
Messier
#11, C
|
18:18 |
D |
The honeymoon is over, baldie. You stunk tonight.
Lazy, multiple turnovers, rarely skated hard, couldn't control the
puck, and so on. Did have a good faceoff night, though, going 16/26.
|
Chris Simon
#17, LW
|
12:04 |
C- |
Not a very pronounced
game, just like his linemates, but at least he had a pair of shots
which is more than either of them can say.
|
Matthew
Barnaby
#36, RW
|
12:48 |
D+ |
While Messier clearly had a poor night, Barnaby
really didn't help that situation at all, either. Hard to remember
anything notable.
|
Dominic Moore
#18, C
|
5:31 |
C |
The
only reason he gets a slightly higher grade than the other half a dozen
or so no-shows is Dominic only had 5 minutes and change to be lazy in
while the rest of them (except Lacouture) had 10 min. plus.
|
Dan
Lacouture
#39, LW
|
5:21 |
C |
See Moore's column. I've done that a lot tonight,
haven't I? I'm being lazy, too!
|
Jamie Lundmark
#21, RW
|
9:27 |
D+ |
Bit of a lazy penalty in
the 2nd, caught waterskiing twice at center ice while back checking.
Not a very good game overall. A very ugly -2.

STAFF: |

TOO. MUCH. MESSIER. It was obvious right from the
start that Mess was going to float tonight, there are also three very
other capable centers on the roster tonight, for Messier to have gotten
over 18 minutes is pretty inexcusable. Also, when it was obvious the
team was tired/lazy tonight, why not play the energetic kid line more?
But Sather actually played them less. |
|
| 1st
PERIOD: |
|
C+ |
QUITE a weird period. For almost exactly the first
half the Rangers looked like a pro team toying with a bunch of high
schoolers. Shots were 11-1 at one point, I think. Rangers were getting
scoring chances almost every time down, Carolina wasn't getting
anything close. The rest of the period was mostly played in the
Rangers' end as it was now the 'Canes who were hustling while the
Rangers were watching. And, oh, amid all the momentum the 'Canes built
up, the Rangers casually scored with a minute and a half left. Like I
said, this period was weird. Made my head hurt. Shots were 16-11
Rangers.
|
| 2nd PERIOD: |
|
D |
Rangers just don't have
NEARLY the same edge or fire tonight that they had on Tuesday. For one,
my man Jussi is getting bumped and shoved and screened all over the
place and the Rangers barely seem concerned about this. Their
discipline has also gone absent tonight. 4 straight minors this period,
and even though Carolina didn't score on any of them it took away any
flow the Rangers had before this, not to mention the many players who
were buried on the bench this period. And just look at these 4
penalties: Hooking, hooking, obstruction, too many men.
LAAAAAA-ZZZZZZZY. If the Rangers played this kind of period against a
team even slightly more talented than Carolina they'd be down by 4
goals right now.
|
| 3rd
PERIOD: |
|
D |
Honestly, I varied this entire period between sitting
at the computer and plucking away at this card and talking on the
phone, just glancing over at the game now and then. Looked much like
the second period where Carolina was the only team really skating. Zzz.
|
| OVERALL: |
|
D |
Very
difficult to watch. After playing good-to-great hockey for no less than
9 games in a row, all of a sudden tonight they decide to mail one in.
And brother, did they mail it! Overnight, insured, registered,
signature required. Started getting outplayed at about the 10 minute
mark of the 1st and their level of play just got progressively worse
from there. Real disappointing - no one really seemed to give a damn
tonight. Jussi getting bumped? Eh, so what! 'Canes outhitting them by a
large margin? That's okay, baby. There's no polite way to put it - the
Rangers did not give a shit tonight.
And while even the greatest teams mail one in now and then, teams who
can get away with a bad loss now and then are a hell of a lot better
than 2 games (now 1 game) over .500! I don't know... I'm not going to
get all bent out of shape from their first bad game in their last ten,
but make no mistake about it, they couldn't have looked much worse
tonight.
