Mike Dunham
#30, G
5/28 C Dunham couldn't have done anything about that one, the Oilers first. A puck deflects off a Ranger to an Oiler about 15 feet up in the slot, who just spun around and ripped it past Mike. Oilers second goal, a York slapshot from the point rings off the crossbar, Dunham loses it and Dvorak (thanks to Kasparaitis) is able to push in the rebound. Third goal was all Dunham's fault. Intercepted the puck behind his net and lazily shot it around the boards into an Oiler, who passed it right back in front to a teammate, Dunham could only get back in time to get a piece of the pass, goal. There's two more goals to talk about... neither were terrible by any stretch, but Dunham just wasn't on top of his game tonight. Not bad, but not good enough.

Brian Leetch
#2, LD
25:42 C Scored with under a minute left in the second, going to the net after a faceoff win in the Oilers zone and picking up the rebound. Checked at the top of his zone in the 3rd period, lost the puck, all the Rangers were out of position and it's another goal. Him and Poti had a very similar game. Both created a decent amount of offense yet were very soft on defense.
Tom Poti
#3, RD
25:28 C Credit Poti for taking Holik's faceoff win and quickly putting a very deflectable wrist shot on net, which Holik did for a goal. Didn't do anywhere NEAR a good enough job checking Torres on the Oilers fourth. Late in the 2nd again took a faceoff win and put it on net quickly, which turned into a rebound and a Leetch goal. Just like Leetch, good on offense, weak on D. The two of them were on the ice for 3 goals against, 2 goals for.
Vladimir Malakhov
#23, LD
17:06 B Decent enough game. Along with Boris, was not on the ice for any goals against. Took a nasty high stick to the nose in the 3rd.
Boris Mironov
#29, RD
19:23 B+ As both Sam and JD noted in the 1st period, Boris looks like a man on a mission tonight. A Bobo on a mission! Skating hard, jumping into the play. Ripped a point shot on the PP from 25 feet out straight through Conklin. Originally credited to Holik, but it should be changed to Mironov by the game's end (and it was). Wasn't nearly as active the rest of the game, but neither was the entire team. Goal, +1, 4 shots.
Darius Kasparaitis
#6, LD
15:22 C C'mon Darius. If you can't keep Radek Dvorak away from an open puck, as he couldn't on the Oilers second goal, then who can you check?
Greg de Vries
#4, RD
14:30 B- I've got nothing particularly bad or good on Greg. 1-, 3 shots. I will say this, he's been getting 6th defenseman ice time lately, and he shouldn't be. Break up the Leetch/Poti pair and team de Vries with one of them!

Bobby Holik
#16, C
17:35 A Won an offensive zone faceoff, went towards the net and deflected Poti's shot out of mid-air over Conklin. Credited with the second Ranger goal but didn't seem to touch the puck. Regardless, he still gets credit for being right in front of the net and making the goalie worry about him. Seemed to be in the crease the whole period, 7-0 on faceoffs, a monster 1st period. Put a well placed backhander on net for a goal late in the 3rd, giving the Rangers one last gasp. 16/24 on faceoffs total. Excellent game. If it weren't for Holik and his line tonight, this probably would've been a 5-1 loss.
Martin Rucinsky
#26, LW
17:47 B So far, it seems like Holik's line is the best place for Martin. More noticably in the game than compared to his assignments on any other line.
Eric Lindros
#88, RW
17:21 B+ His offensive game is still struggling but getting better, and unlike Saturday, Eric wasn't hitting today. He did get 3 assists, and all three were primary assists, but Lindros really had little to do with any of the goals. Still, though, when you pick up 3 assists and a +2, it's a good night regardless.
Petr Nedved
#93, C
16:00 C Led the team in shots with 7, but also was tied for team worst with a -2.
Matthew Barnaby
#36, LW
11:28 C+ Took the high sticking minor which allowed the Oilers to tie it at 2. He was into the game with 2 shots and 4 PIMs, but along with his linemates, picked up a -2.
Anson Carter
#22, RW
13:59 C He looked into it early but really quieted down and became more and more sloppy as the game went on.
Mark Messier
#11, C
17:16 D- Nice job drawing a penalty on a 1st period PK. Watch a replay of the Oilers goal #4 if you can. Leetch is behind the net battling for the puck, puck comes back out to the front of the net, Messier is just standing there, STANDING THERE, watching Torres take a few whacks at the puck and finally put it in. And I don't mean it was a moment of indecision, he just stood there for about 4-5 seconds, WATCHING! Too frustrating to even talk about. I can't stand him anymore. With Messier getting only 10 minutes like he used to instead of 18 I swear this team would give up 1 goal per game fewer.
Chris Simon
#17, LW
13:18 C+ He was alright. I guess. Not as good as he was earlier in the season.
Alexei Kovalev
#27, RW
20:44 C- Seemed to skate with a little more confidence than he has recently. 20 seconds into the 2nd - what the hell is he thinking? Him and an Oiler go to the corner for a puck, Kovalev jumps into the air to let the Oiler go by but also grabbed his shoulder and ripped him down. It looked like a quarterback sack and also killed a PP. Later in the period took a pass all alone in front of Conklin and inexplicably shot it about a foot wide. He's really become like a 2nd/3rd line also ran with the Rangers. When the Rangers down by 1 late, is anyone even thinking Kovalev? That's how unremarkable he's become.
Dominic Moore
#18, C
10:06 C

I think he should go back to Hartford when Rheaume or Healy come back. Not because he's playing poorly, but his game has quieted down noticably and there's only so much he can do here on the 4th line.

Jan Hlavac
#37, LW
6:09 C+ Very nice back check on York in the 1st period, caught up to him and disrupted him enough to where York couldn't get off a good shot. That's about all I can tell you I noticed about Jan tonight.
Jamie Lundmark
#21, RW
9:05 C+ Had a nice shift in the 3rd period. 9 minutes and one good shift... while there's only so much he can do on this line, it wasn't a highly defensible performance, either.

COACHING STAFF:
D Lindros still on the wing. Lines are all switched up again with only the Rucinsky/Holik/Lindros line the same from last game. Once again went mostly with three lines, though not as severe as on Saturday. It's VERY hard to understand how the team can have success rolling 4 lines and with the same line combos they had through almost all of pre-season and early in the season, and now, FOR SOME REASON, they can't do this anymore. Why??

1st PERIOD:
B Tough period to get a handle on. Rangers lead 2-1, but the Oilers outshot 'em 11-8. Rangers offense looks more confident and the defense looks good enough, though the Oilers haven't had a complete lack of chances, either. Both Ranger goals were certainly legit, but maybe a bit on the soft side.
2nd PERIOD:
D- That figures! Of all people to have to score tonight, it had to be Dvorak! He couldn't score for the Rangers at all last season, couldn't score at all for the Oilers this season, but OF COURSE HE CAN SCORE AGAINST THE RANGERS! God I hate that guy.

The rest of the period itself was an abomination. This team has serious issues right now. Lately they have been letting their play down by huge margins between periods, usually between the 1st and the 2nd, actually. Managed to salvage a shred of dignity with a Leetch goal with about a minute left, but unless they come back to win this game, it's pointless.
3rd PERIOD:
C Outshot the Oilers 14-6, but more sloppy defensive zone coverage early in the period and the game was pretty much over then at 5-3. Turned it on hard in the last 5 minutes after the Holik goal, but big deal.
OVERALL:
D+

Oh, there's a trend alright. Their level of play from period to period. They're just not working hard for 60 minutes like they used to, and the laziness virus has infected more than a few players. A 2-0 lead early, Conklin looked pretty shaky for the Oilers, this should've been a 5-2 laugher. But they thought the game was over already at 2-0 and stopped working, definitely signs of a team that's too full of itself right now. And Sather has had his own problems lately, but he still needs to start coming down hard on this team again. And I don't mean by scratching people or changing the lines. Go back to how the lines were earlier in the season and reiterate how their success has come with all 19 players going hard the whole game, and evenly divide the ice time to reinforce that idea. This really, really looks like last year's team right now. Good enough to win but too inconsistent to pull it off.

Scratches:

Joel Bouchard (healthy)
Pavel Bure (knee - IR)
Paul Healey (knee - IR)
Dan Lacouture (healthy)
