Mike
Dunham
#30, G
|
3/31
|
B- |
His rebounds have been sketchy but his reflexes look
good. In fact, he JUST missed saving both Panther goals in the 1st
period, either of which would've made the highlight reel easily.
Panthers third goal, Jokinen was allowed to skate in open on Dunham and
Mike was completely frozen by a great against the grain wrist shot to
his upper right. And that was practically the last shot he faced in the
final 39 minutes of the game. Considering he hasn't played in 10 days
it was hardly perfect but could've been much worse. Except for some
early rebound issues and getting frozen on that third goal, no major
mistakes.

Brian Leetch
#2, LD
|
28:04 |
B+ |
Him and de Vries were
the only defensive pair without fault in the 1st period, Leetch
especially looking sharp. Nice play on a 2nd period PP, waiting for a
screen to set up and getting a quick, low shot on net for Lindros to
deflect in. All night looked quick and confident and finally seems back
to form.
|
Greg de Vries
#4, RD
|
22:31 |
B |
The fact that Leetch has
been playing much better lately is not without de Vries help. Didn't
notice any egregious mistakes and always seemed to be in position. |
Vladimir
Malakhov
#23, LD
|
19:46 |
B |
Seemed like it was Malakhov's giveaway that led to
the rush that produced Florida's third goal. Even if it wasn't, Vlad
gets points off for backing in WAY too far on the 2-on-1, allowing
Jokinen all the room in the world to get the shot off. Fantastic pass
on one of the nicest goals of the season for the Rangers third goal -
Malakhov was the recipent of Kovalev's blueline wizardry, skated in
towards the goalie freezing him then hit a streaking Mironov with a
very nice cross ice pass. Some good, some bad. 1 shot.
|
Boris Mironov
#29, RD
|
20:16 |
B |
Boris was just the
fortunate final piece to the Rangers' highlight reel third goal, but
give him credit for driving to the net without the puck and being in
position to finish the play off. Jumped into the play a lot during the
3rd and got off 3 shots total.
|
Darius
Kasparaitis
#6, LD
|
15:44 |
C+ |
Very rough 1st period for this pairing, mostly
Kasparaitis' fault. It looked like he was using a wrong handed stick as
every pass he made for about 10 minutes missed it's targets badly.
Rebounded well enough over the final two periods, though.
|
Tom Poti
#3, RD
|
19:31 |
B |
Not a bad game,
especially considering he had to deal with the erratic Kasparaitis
during his 1st period adventures. Took a puck straight off the face in
the 3rd period, barely even flinched and resumed his shift as normal.
Surely another detail that will be missed by the large contingent of
Ranger fans who think the guy is the biggest wuss to ever put on hockey
skates. Had good jump late and seemed to get double shifted late in the
3rd and OT because of it.

Bobby
Holik
#16, C
|
20:22 |
A- |
Gotta love Holik on the PP this season. If the
Rangers score a PP goal you can almost be certain Holik's big, ugly
butt is right in the goalie's face, screening him, as it was on
Lindros' PP goal in the 2nd. This is one of the best games you could
see a forward play without scoring a goal. I think Holik won every puck
battle all night, was constantly in the crease opening up the ice for
his talented linemates, played mean and at one point knocked a Panther
over the boards - just an awesome game.
|
Martin Rucinsky
#26, LW
|
21:29 |
B |
The quiet one on the
game's dominant line, which is not to say Rucinsky played a bad game
but rather how good Holik and Kovalev were.
|
Alexei
Kovalev
#27, RW
|
23:08 |
B+ |
Nice 1st period with a pair of good scoring chances.
AMAZING play to set up the Rangers third goal. While in the offensive
zone Kovalev pokes the puck forward towards the blueline to get it away
from his checker, then right on the very edge of the blueline passes it
no look behind his back through the Panther player to a streaking
Malakhov, who eventually finished the play with a nice pass to Mironov!
It's hard to describe, you've got to see the replay for yourself. Led
the team with a massive SEVEN shots. He's really looking great right
now, every time he touches the puck something happens.
|
Petr Nedved
#93, C
|
20:08 |
B- |
One of the main culprits
on the Panthers' second goal, left his man for a second in the slot to
chase the puck, the puck comes back to Nedved's check who was wide open
to put the puck in. Picked his game up noticably in the 2nd and
especially 3rd period, particularly a wicked wrist shot late in the 3rd
that was labeled for the upper right corner that Luongo made a great
save on.
|
Jan
Hlavac
#37, LW
|
15:16 |
B- |
Okay game. 3 shots is a nice change of pace from his
usual 1 shot. As usual, I don't have much to say about Hlavac.
|
Anson Carter
#22, RW
|
12:16 |
B- |
Decent game, I thought.
Nothing major, but skated hard and showed his typical good puck
control. VERY frustratingly shot high from between the circles on a
good chance with about 8 minutes left and left the game after that with
what was speculated as a hand injury.
|
Mark
Messier
#11, C
|
16:06 |
B |
Was mostly the fortunate recipient of Barnaby's great
pass, but give Messier credit for getting his stick out quickly and
sure-handedly deflecting it into the net on the backhand. Tough to find
much of anything else to say about his game positively or negatively,
except he was an atrocious 3 for 13 on faceoffs. 3 shots, +1.
|
Chris Simon
#17, LW
|
13:09 |
B |
Holy hell. Don't tell me
Chris Simon can't fight anymore. Some kid named McNeil got the early
jump on Simon landing the first 5 or so shots, Simon patiently got his
gloves off and landed about 3 huge shots directly to McNeil's face, one
of them knocking him to the ice. Simon looked like a pro boxer in a bar
fight and probably could've hurt the kid a lot worse if he wanted to.
That fight seemed to wind him up as he played a mean game from there on
out, though nothing notable offensively. 3 shots.
|
Matthew
Barnaby
#36, RW
|
14:15 |
B- |
Couldn't handle a pass at the blueline but stayed
focused on the puck, blocked the clearing attempt and skated wide into
the zone until he hit Messier on a beautiful 25 foot pass across the
zone for Messier's backhanded goal. Otherwise looked a bit shaky,
nothing serious but seemed to have a little problem controlling the
puck. No shots.
|
Eric Lindros
#88, C
|
13:18 |
B |
Nice
deflection from about 10-15 feet out for a PP goal in the 2nd. Just got
enough of a low Leetch shot to change it's direction. Moved to the RW
of Nedved's line in the 3rd once Carter went out and played strong
there with a few good chances. Second on the team with 4 shots.
|
Richard
Scott
#13, LW
|
7:30 |
C |
Certainly didn't have anywhere near the energy
tonight as he had last night. Maybe two big hits and little else.
|
Jed Ortmeyer
#41, RW
|
7:34 |
C- |
Bad 1st period. A few
times fumbled the puck and one time just fell down when he had an open
outside track to the net. Right after that took a hooking penalty which
led to the Panthers first goal. Didn't do much else otherwise.
|
|
|
| COACHING
STAFF: |
|
A- |
Give Sather and the staff credit, it was clear the
Holik line and the Leetch/de Vries pairing were the units that were
really going tonight, and they played 'em heavily. In fact, it looked
like Holik's line was being double shifted almost the entire 2nd
period. Messier ice time-watchers will also be happy to note he was a
far distant third in time among centers tonight. It was one of the
better coached games of the year, actually.
|
|
| 1st
PERIOD: |
|
C |
Started off very strongly getting all the offensive
chances and limiting the Panthers to next to nothing in the first 8-9
minutes. Messier scores and it looks like it could be a laugher if the
Rangers kept this pace up. Obviously, they didn't. Seemingly on cue,
like this was planned beforehand, all of a sudden the Rangers started
making atrocious turnovers in the neutral zone and scrambled around in
the defensive zone. Until regaining some balance in the final few
minutes, the Rangers were lucky to escape having only given up two.
Shots 15-7 Florida.
|
| 2nd PERIOD: |
|
B+ |
Rangers still looked
shaky at first, Florida scores in the first minute to make it 3-1 then
it was ALL Rangers for the final 16 or 17minutes. Panthers maybe had
one good scoring chance after the two minute mark while the Rangers
must've had a dozen. Shots only ended up 11-10 in favor of the Rangers,
but really, it seemed like 90% of the period was in the Panthers' end.
|
| 3rd
PERIOD: |
|
A- |
No goals, but the Rangers absolutely dominated the
period and would've scored three goals were Luongo not on the top of
his game. Shots were 18-4! Rangers easily should've had this game dead
and buried but for Luongo, and I'm not overstating this, it was ONLY
due to Florida's goalie that they desperately managed to hang on for a
point. Rangers shouldn't have any regrets, they left it all out there
in the 3rd period.
|
| OVERALL: |
|
B+ |
A
frustrating tie, but not because the Rangers sloppily left a point
sitting out there but because they did nearly everything they could in
the final two periods and the ONLY thing that kept them from that
second point was Roberto Luongo and him alone. Of the final 40 minutes,
it seemed like 35 of them were played in the Panthers zone. All of a
sudden the Rangers started winning every puck battle, every pass
clicked and the Rangers looked like they were playing a minor league
team with an all-star goalie.
If
you want to look for negatives, of course, it was the late 1st period
and early 2nd. At times recently they're playing as well as they have
in years except they always seem to have 10-20 minutes of sloppiness
every game, which is why they continue to hover around .500. This team
is still impossible to get a read on, but you can see some confidence
building and line combinations clicking, and at a game over .500,
that's not a terrible place to be right now.
