Hated Rivals, Round 2
Thursday - January 15, 2004
The Devils are slumping, the Rangers are... well, the Rangers are never really "rolling", but they have been on a bit of an upswing lately. Don't look now, but the eighth place Rangers are only 7 points behind the sixth place Devils. MSG, 7pm. You know you will. Brian presents some new fantasy news, and make sure you stay tuned for the gibberish Latin at the end. Fratello. Very timely! Yon Rodent also has a quick one. The Star-Ledger has some interesting articles today, like this one on the Rangers' plan to not let shrimpy pest Brian Gionta get them off their game again like happened in November. Here's one from the Devils side of the Ledger, Scott Stevens will not play tonight. Has a strong case of the flu. Shucks. The injured Jamie Langenbrunner was supposed to be skating by now but he's also suffering a very bad flu, confirming my suspicion that the Devils sit around and make out with each other when not playing hockey. In what must be about the fourth different fill-in writer for Larry Brooks at the Post this season, Nick Parish talks about (yawn) the Rangers needing to maintain their discipline. I wonder if Uncle 'Lar is giving up the beat writer position after the season and all of these guys are trying out. The Devils side of the Post reminds us the Devils own the Rangers like the Rangers own the Islanders. Come to think of it, haven't the Isles beaten the Devils their last three times? This is getting to be like some complicated metro area hockey love triangle. Look for the Woody Allen film this summer. Insiders are saying Diane Keaton's portrayal of Steve Stirling just may win her an Oscar. The Daily News talks about what I noted above: Devils slumping, Rangers (sort of) surging, 7 points between them. Yet another stat-filled yawner from Diamos at the Times. It's nice to get a little statistical background on the matchups, but this isn't the Stock Quotes page, either. That's what the "notes" section is for at the bottom: stats, injuries, roster moves, etc. Give me something to read in the main article. Ah well, not like I had to pay for it. The Journal News runs through all the themes (Devils slumping, Rangers rising, Devils own Rangers, etc.), but I found this quote more interesting: "Unlike his stormy first tenure with the Rangers, when such a draught would send him into a funk that affected the rest of the team, Kovalev has shown little to no frustration." Obviously Andrew Gross is able to see a different Kovalev than I can, because based on his mannerisms and body language I'd think Alex was almost ready for a 24hr. suicide watch. I don't think I've seen him smile or laugh once this season. Forget smiling, he seems to have a frown and hang-dog look going on every time you see him! I get depressed just looking at the guy! And Gross says he doesn't go into "funks" anymore? Kovy must be a real barrel of monkeys when the camera isn't on him. - Rocha Posted by pete at January 15, 2004 05:34 AMeMail this entry! Comments
