Mike
Dunham
#30, G
|
3/33 |
B- |
Strong first period with several scrambling saves.
The first goal in the 2nd Dunham bit hard on the first fake on a
partial breakaway, Rasmussen brought the puck back on a great move and
pushed it in with Dunham having slid out of the picture. Devils second
goal, a 2-on-1, Dunham had to play the shooter and did, the pass gets
through and into a narrow opening in the net. Third goal against was
horrendous, Dunham takes a shot from his right cricle, puts the rebound
directly onto a Devils stick in the left circle, slides out to meet the
shot which either got between his arm and body or just off his shoulder
and in. Dunham played pretty well at times, but he would've gotten a B
if that third goal didn't look so ugly.

Brian Leetch
#2, LD
|
26:59 |
C- |
What is the matter with
Leetch?! My God is he playing terribly right now. He's not making
anything happen on the PP like he just woke up and hasn't had any
coffee, then he gets caught behind the redline in the offensive zone
leading to a 2-on-1 goal against. I was hoping to see him redeem
himself in the 3rd period with one of those late game performances like
last season, didn't happen. No shots, too. Just seems really off his
game offensively right now.
|
Tom Poti
#3, RD
|
22:22 |
B- |
Could've played that
2-on-1 a little better. Poti dropped to the ice early to block the pass
and while Madden had to make a nice pass to get it around Poti, he was
unable to pressure Madden by being on his stomach so early. Did a
fantastic job tying up and knocking down a rushing Neidermeyer in OT.
When I first say that play I thought it must've been one of our bigger
defensemen like Mironov or Purinton and did a double take when I saw it
was Poti.

Vladimir
Malakhov
#23, LD
|
25:52 |
B |
I can't remember anything in particular about Vlad's
game, but with nearly 26 minutes, an assist, +1 and 2 shots, I guess it
was pretty good. |
Boris Mironov
#29, RD
|
21:40 |
B |
Same as above. Must've
had a pretty good game based on the numbers, including a team high +2.
It should also be noted that Vlad and Bobo far led the team in SH time
with 4:37 a piece, and the PK was very good. |
Darius
Kasparaitis
#6, LD
|
18:25 |
B |
Mid 1st, took a run at Brylin, missed him but annoyed
him enough into taking a retaliation penalty and so far it's looking
like power plays are going to be VERY important in this cautious game.
|
Dale Purinton
#5, RD
|
11:59 |
B |
Since I missed the
Ranger/Islander game last Saturday, this is the best game I've seen
from Dale since his return, although he got about 4 less minutes than a
typical 6th defenseman. A few nervous moments, I just wish Dale would
get it through his head he's not Brian Leetch and shouldn't be hanging
around the goal net except in extreme
circumstances, but none of his pinches or meanderings into the zone
ended up hurting the team.

Bobby
Holik
#16, C
|
17:25 |
B- |
Bumped the inlaw humper a lot, trying to get him off
his game. Maybe it worked since Brodeur didn't look at his best. Not a
huge game, 2 shots, a nice 69% on faceoffs but also a -2.
|
Martin Rucinsky
#26, LW
|
18:40 |
B- |
Wow. Mister Plus, Martin
Rucinsky, with a -2? He was fourth in the league before tonight. Had 5
shots, though I can't say any were great chances.
|
Alexei
Kovalev
#27, RW
|
19:15 |
B |
Great backcheck on Madden to get him off balance from
scoring an empty net goal. Also noticed him being lazy on a few other
backchecks, though. Led the team with 6 shots, but like his linemates,
a -2. He may not have been very effective, but at least he wasn't
frustrating.
|
Petr Nedved
#93, C
|
19:50 |
B |
This line was the team's
best tonight, easily. Nedved was hardly spectacular, but solid. The
three of them were creative in setting up scoring chances. 3 shots, +1. |
Jan
Hlavac
#37, LW
|
11:24 |
C |
He played a good, energetic game, so it's a shame he
ends up being one of the goats of the game but he is. Carter feeds
Hlavac with a cross crease pass, Hlavac has a WIDE OPEN net to simply
just redirect it in and he one-times the pass back to Carter in one of
the most mindboggling plays of the entire season. Stunning, really. If
Jan puts the shot on net I'd guess he had an, oh, 90% chance of scoring
the goal! Thankfully Barnaby scored later so it lessened the impact of
Hlavac's blunder.
|
Anson Carter
#22, RW
|
14:38 |
B+ |
First he broke up the
play in the neutral zone, followed Hlavac into the Devils zone and
smartly slowed down a bit giving him room for a shot, took a big
slapper from the top of the circles that beat Brodeur on the far side.
Great play. 3rd period worked off the boards to set up Hlavac with the
gimme goal pass, which Hlavac amazingly passed back to him. One of
Carter's best games in a while.
|
Eric
Lindros
#88, C
|
19:01 |
B- |
Nah. Not enough. Wasn't terrible, but didn't force
the play like he's been doing the last few weeks. No shots.
|
Chad Wiseman
#15, LW
|
11:28 |
B |
Shaky, again. Made a
nice backcheck in the 1st, but that was HIS turnover causing Wiseman to
backcheck in the first place. Also made a NZ turnover in the 1st. At
least he skates hard and finishes his checks, but his puck handling and
passing skills are practically sub-Ortmeyer.
And then he scores a goal, the first of his NHL career. Trailed behind
the play, picked up an errant Barnaby pass and flipped it in the top
corner from about 10 feet out. Surprising because it was looking like
Chad wouldn't even get a shot on goal, but what the hell, a big gial in
a big spot so his C or C- becomes a B.
|
Matthew
Barnaby
#36, RW
|
11:43 |
B |
A subpar effort then piled on that with an EXTREMELY
stupid penalty in a 3-2 game in the 3rd, offensive zone no less, threw
his hands into the face of a Devil that was trying to interfere with
Barnaby on the foreheck.
And just like Wiseman, it happens again - a bad game turned into a good
one with a timely goal. Barnaby's game was worse than Wiseman's up
until his goal, but the goal was also more important than Chad's. I had
Matthew already slotted for a "C-", but goals don't get much bigger
than the one he scored. Let it be known he pretty much stunk up until
then, though.
|
Mark Messier
#11, C
|
16:08 |
B |
Came
out late for the 2nd after taking a helmet to the side of the mouth
late in the 1st. Took a slashing call while on the PK which gave the
Devils a long 5-on-3, but it was a touchy call since the slash was on a
stick. Sticks break way too easily these days and that rule should be
changed. Big play, carried the puck behind the net and passed out front
to Barnaby for the crucial game tying goal.
|
Pascal
Rheaume
#20, LW
|
10:34 |
B- |
I've got nothin'. Did have a lot of SH time among
forwards. 2 shots. I wonder what Manon is doing right now. Maybe she's
taking a bath. Hmm.
|
Jed Ortmeyer
#41, RW
|
8:44 |
B- |
Not sure why, but Jed
only got 7 seconds of PK time, when that's pretty much the whole reason
why he's on the team.

Roster and lines remain the same from last game
except for a flip of Wiseman and Rheaume. Ice times were well spread
out. It hasn't been mentioned but Sather has been playing 4 lines
pretty consistently lately.
|
|
| 1st
PERIOD: |
|
A- |
I wasn't sure what to think of the period. While the
Rangers are playing it safe and disciplined, they're also kind of
playing the Devils game - just jousting back and forth waiting for
mistakes. I'd rather see the Rangers dictate the game a little more,
but so far so good as they have the 1-0 lead. Shots were 12-8 NJ, which
really wasn't very indicitive of the evenly played period.
|
| 2nd PERIOD: |
|
C |
Very strange period.
Rangers came out flying looking to build on the lead, lots of pressure,
the inlaw humper makes some great saves and the Devils get a goal from
out of nowhere, completely changing the face of the game. Devils add
another but the Rangers seemingly regain the momentum by killing off a
long 5-on-3, crowd going crazy yet the Rangers can't build on it.
Frustrating. Just a few mistakes in a good effort so far and the
Rangers are down 2-1. Shots 13-11 NY.
|
| 3rd
PERIOD: |
|
B+ |
Another weird period. Rangers score early, Devils get
a soft one later and just when you think the Devils have the one goal
lock down on and the Rangers can't get anything going, a seemingly
simple play turns into a Barnaby goal to tie it with under 2 minutes
left. Hey, coming back twice on the Devils from a one goal deficit in
the 3rd period is no small thing. Shots 12-8 Rangers.
|
| OVERALL: |
|
B |
Forget
making heads or tails of this game. It was almost surreal. Both teams
played pretty well, but I don't think ANY of the six goals were scored
off momentum, they just... happened. When you didn't expect it, the
Devils score. You're not expecting it again, Rangers score. And so on
four more times. Overall the Rangers played well, and granted they were
playing a much better team and goaltender tonight than on Tuesday
night, but the effort overall wasn't quite as unrelenting. Not as
disciplined, either. Add to this, some of the heroes of the game like
Wiseman and Barnaby were having pretty poor games up until their goals.
Again, I have no definitive statement to make. Sometimes they played
very well, sometimes it was more so-so. Not a single player had a great
game, yet none were awful, either. Whatever. Another huge one, Saturday
in Montreal is next.
