And Now, The Rest Of The Season
Monday - February 09, 2004

11
I missed out on seeing the game. I'm disappointed in that I have enjoyed so few games this year and this one sounds like it might have been enjoyable.

The Rodent has added the berthWatch format to the Western Conference as well as the East. He also covers some other interesting hockey stuff.

Newsday - "I really didn't think I was in a position to be here at the start of the season," he said. "It was a surprise to me to be selected. And I think that you have to play with pride as often, and in as many games, as you can. I've had a good year so far and this is a testimony to that."

Daily News - "The goaltending made the game what it was," said Mark Messier, who probably wishes he could say the same after most Rangers games. "It's the most improved position over the past 10 to 15 years. It has changed everything about the game."

Daily News - Goalie Sean Burke will be a Philadelphia Flyer today. Or he will be a Ranger. Or he may remain a Phoenix Coyote.

Gee....thanks for filling us in.

NY Post - The Captain had the jump, in a game in which nobody had to worry about getting jumped. But as cynical as one might be about the damning faint praise that has made him the Rangers' "best player" in another disappointing season, Messier got one of the bigger hands in the introductions.

NY Times - Though the third-oldest All-Star in N.H.L. history — only Gordie Howe, at 51, and Doug Harvey, at 44, were older — Messier played with as much friskiness as anyone.

Journal News - "He's not just hanging in there," Calgary's Jarome Iginla said. "He's doing well. He dippsy-dooed me a couple of times today. It was a special feeling to get to be in an All-Star Game with him, to just watch him."

Star-Ledger - "(Jagr) and Lang were trying to set me up the whole game," Messier said. "Perhaps this may be my last All-Star Game. Because it wasn't expected, I enjoyed it that much more."

That confirms it for me.....Messier is done after this season. You can keep the "it's about time" jokes to yourself for the moment. Messier has been one of the all-time great players in the NHL and for one day, let's just celebrate that. As I mentioned last night, the Captain has provided some of the few high points of the season.....I'm going to try and enjoy his last remaining games.
