New Rules In The Future
Wednesday - February 11, 2004

I'm a little embarrassed that I forgot to mention the new rules being discussed at the GM meetings in Vegas. It appears that some of the new rules are actually rescinding rule changes from years past such as the touch up off sides thing and moving the nets back to where they used to be.

I for one am totally against one possible change. Giving a two minute penalty to a goaltender for playing the puck behind the goal line is just wrong IMO. You are punishing skill with this. The lack of "skilled play" is what the GMs are attempting to address but I believe they got it ass backwards. It's true that some of today's top keepers play the puck so well that they are kind of a third defenseman back there......so where's the problem with that ?

What's next, a penalty for guys who clear the puck really good ? Two minutes for a wicked glove save ? C'mon guys.....there has got to be a better way.

There's the beginning of a real good debate on the rule change proposals here on the boards. (FYI - guest viewing of the boards has been temporarily disabled so you'll have to register to read or post. I'll re-enable it after the new server is up and running.)

Bird, the problem with the goalies playing the puck is that they are immune to all rules other skaters are subject to. They can't have it both ways. Either stay in the crease, or venture out at their own peril. Since hitting goalies is out of the question, they decided to close a loop hole in the rules that allows a goalie to be a 3rd defenseman without having to suffer the consequences.

I understand, I just disagree.

I don't see it as a loop hole in the rules at all. Some keepers are better than others so this will effect only a few teams. Hell, the Rangers should fine their keepers for touching the puck the way they have played the puck over the last 10 years or so.

I'm not against making a keeper fair game out there....but agree it won't happen.

It's just plain wrong to legislate against some players who have excelled in a part of their game.

Maybe so, but remember that it has happened before.
The reason a player is allowed to step out of the penalty box after a powerplay goal, instead of serving the full penalty, is because of the skill the old Montreal powerplay had.
They had to come up with a rule to even the playing field.
