Sather Fires Sather ?
Wednesday - February 25, 2004

Larry Brooks reports in the NY Post today that Glen Sather the GM has fired Glen Sather the coach. Think about that for a second......I'm not saying it's a false report but Larry doesn't exactly have a great track record.

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt this time (he deserves it as I have been hard on Mr. Brooks this year).....assume this is true. Are you happy ? If yes, why ? What does this really do for you and or the Rangers ? In my opinion this does nothing......nothing at all. Glen Sather was not going to coach the next season, whenever that takes place. A new head coach does nothing to interrupt the seventh sad season. They are not making the playoffs. Hell, they may not win another game all season.

So what does this accomplish ? Glen Sather does escape the face to face with the boo-birds for one. That in itself opens up the door for criticism. The real benefit is that the GM will now have the time to do GM stuff......in other words....sell mode. I sure hope that's the case. If it isn't then this just adds insult to injury.

Again, let's assume that it's on the up and up......and Slats sells off a few vets for the future. Who goes ? I was asked to pen an article on that but I'm not sure I'm qualified....perhaps the Rodent should be consulted. He's already touched on this subject a few times.

So....let's hope this is not just a cowardly PR move. Let's hope some good comes out of it. But really, if you are looking for this to have any effect for the on ice product this year, think again. No real coach is coming in here for what amounts to be a decent paying temp job. And don't think for a second that Sather will allow some new coach to bench Messier or form defensive pairings that do not include Leetch and Poti as partners (assuming that both players remain on the team). Whoever (Tom Renny) takes the reins is still just a walkie talkie away from the real man behind the curtain, right ?

Yup....as I predicted the other day, this team always does something just as our interest falls. They had too.....when the hard core, die hards like you and I say "who cares" in reference to the Rangers.....ownership reacts.

**Update** WFAN in NY reports the Tom Renny will assume the role of head coach for the rest of the season. Messier must be thrilled.
