Overtime Loss Means Little
Sunday - February 29, 2004
Jussi the Finn had a tremendous game. Tomas Vokoun played even better. To see two keepers play so well was enjoyable.....kinda. The Kovalev penalty in OT was of course the final reason the Rangers lost.....but really, there are so many other reasons. I can't get too worked up about it.......it's not like we're in the race and needed the extra point. For me these remaining games are a chance to see some of the kids. Fedor Tyutin continues to impress me. As JD has gone out of his way to point out, he's big....will get bigger and he seems to enjoy the physical aspect of the game. He also shows skill. It's why I'll be tuned in today at three to see the Blueshirts vs. Atlanta. I know I'll see some good young talent on both clubs. I have no clever intro for the Rodent link...so here it is. NY Post - Kovalev's definition of "fighting through it" is 41 points in 64 games. No wonder why, when Holik was asked if the sound of the truck backing up to the clubhouse door was making Rangers either nervous or intrigued, he said: "It can only be positive". More Larry Brooks - Ray Bourque left Boston at age 39 and won a Cup in Colorado. Chris Chelios left Chicago at age 37 and won one more Cup, maybe going on two, in Detroit. Maybe Leetch, the only Ranger who has been here through all of the last seven years, doesn't even know it, but he will be far better off for leaving this quagmire. He will be a better hockey player someplace else than he will ever again be on Broadway. Newsday - The Rangers took too many penalties, couldn't score early against a hot goaltender and missed the net with too many shots. Although the Rangers, led by goaltender Jussi Markkanen's 41 saves, killed eight power plays by staying in the shooting lanes, the inevitable couldn't be avoided. NY Times - Rangers right wing Aleksei Kovalev has had a reverse Midas touch this season: everything he has come in contact with has fallen apart, much like the Rangers' season. Scotty Bowman writes for the NY Times - I'm glad the general managers and the owners are looking for ways to open up the game. Nothing should prevent a free and open discussion on how to improve it. Because if we don't act soon, the game we love will only continue to deteriorate. Daily News - That lucky troll he kept in his 1994 locker notwithstanding, Alexei Kovalev insists he is not a superstitious guy. Daily News - Asked about his team's high payroll and star system by interviewer John McKeachie of Team Sports Radio, Sather said acquiring players like Eric Lindros, Jaromir Jagr, Pavel Bure and Alex Kovalev wasn't all his idea Now I'm convinced he's gotta go. Either do it right or go home....I never want to hear another NYR GM say that a player on his team wasn't his idea.....NEVER AGAIN. The Journal News makes an interesting point.....meaning I may have been wrong about us (the fans) being able to influence who runs the Rangers. More Journal News - "I wish I didn't have that penalty because maybe we could've gotten a goal or just ended up tying, but those things happen,'' Kovalev said. "I don't know why it keeps happening to me.'' We'll end with the Star-Ledger. In other NHL news.....TSN reprted that Forsberg will play in Sweden next season. I'm happy to hear this and I hope other players do the same....the NHL and the NHLPA will eventually agree on something....but in the end, we the fans will get screwed again. So, those players who love the game should play while these two fight it out.....and just maybe we'll get to watch or listen to some kind of hockey next season. ----}- Bird Posted by Bird at February 29, 2004 10:08 AMeMail this entry!
