Playoff Fever!!!!
Tuesday - April 13, 2004

Yeah... I'm totally not feeling it. Generally speaking I soak up these last bits of hockey like an alcoholic drinks vanilla extract. I mean, not only might this be the last NHL hockey we get to see for some time, but these are the palyoffs. This is when hockey goes from great to something even better than great. So why the indifference on my part? I don't know -- I guess the Rangers broke my will this season. I'll likely start paying attention next round. (Say -- the Knicks made the playoffs! Maybe I'll watch some basketball instead.)

Anyway, before we get to the play off coverage, Larry Brooks has a Rangers article in today's New York Post. The article covers breakup day and doesn't really tell us anything we didn't all ready know but there were some intereting quotes and at least Brooks tried which is more than I can say for the rest of the beat writers who are off somewhere playing golf. First, here's Sather on accountability:

"The responsibility for the season lies here and I'm not going to duck it, but I'm not going to analyze everything that happened or why we didn't win."

Yeah, because that would be madness, wouldn't it Glen? Analyzing what went wrong and learning from one's mistakes is always a bad idea in my experience.

Eric would like to return next season and we do need a number one center so, if the price is right, it may well happen. Here's what Eric had to say:

"Despite how poor the team results have been, there are some fundamentally sound aspects to playing with this organization and in this city," said Lindros. "It's going to be different, almost like starting from scratch, but, yeah, I'd like to be a part of it."

Note the contrast to Bobby "He Should Be Captain" Holik's attitude.

Okay, on to playoff coverage. Here's ESPN with last night's scoreboard.

New Jersey 4 - Flyers 2

The Post -- Gionta + Elias + Gomez + Power Play = Victory. I wonder why they waited so long.

The Philadelphia Inquirer (Login Required) -- "You didn't really think the Flyers were going to sweep the defending Stanley Cup champions out of the playoffs, did you?"

Tampa Bay 3 - NY Islanders 0

The Tampa Tribune -- Guts:

"There was enough guts [Monday], and that's what you need in the playoffs," St. Louis said. "Empty your tank on every shift. We will get you your rest, and when you get back out there you will be rested. Just empty it every time, and I thought we did that."

The Post -- Blake goes from hero to goat:

But the good vibrations and the comforts of home both worked against the Islanders, who came out hard for the first period. Maybe too hard, evidenced by Jason Blake being whistled for a boarding call 1:50 into the game when he came in late to mash Daryl Sydor into the corner.

Toronto 2 - Ottawa 0

Toronto Sun -- Belfour's chiropracter gets 1st star of the game.

Ottawa Sun -- Belfour's got the Sen's number and many more articles.

Dallas 4 - Colorado 3

The Dallas Morning News -- Stars come back in the game and in the series.

The Denver Post has multiple articles including one blaming Granato for letting his team blow the lead.

St. Louis 4 - San Jose 1

St Louis Post Dispatch -- Mike Sillinger gets a goal for each of his three
sons. Kinda cool -- two of his sons were in attendence.

San Jose Mercury News -- Sharks waited too long to counter attack.

Tonight's Games:

St. Louis and San Jose play again.

The Boston Globe has multiple articles regarding the Bruin's series with Montreal.

Tonight, in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal playoff series, the Bruins are hoping their so-far dormant top line of center Joe Thornton, left wing Mike Knuble, and right wing Glen Murray will get back to form. In the first three games of this series -- two of which have been won by Boston -- that line has combined for just 1 point.

The Vancouveer Sun wonders in Hedberg, filling in for the injured Dan Cloutier, can recapture his post season magic. Do not ask me about the picture accompanying that article. I really don't want to know.

The Detroit Free Press has four articles today to get folks ready for tonight's game against Nashville.

That about wraps it up for today. Enjoy the playoff hockey and I'll try being a little more in the playoff mood by Friday.

Ah ha. No wonder it told us nothing new ;)

Eh, I'd wonder if the Sather's comment about not analyzing things was meant to be about not analyzing the reasons for losing to the media...like he's not gonna stand there at that moment and go over every detail with the media

just kind of an ambiguous quote
