Vicarious Victories
Thursday - April 15, 2004
Some Ranger fans take the high road and don't wish ill on our rivals. Not me. A Devil or Islander loss is worth about half a Ranger win in my book, such fun it is to watch them struggle. Both ate it last night by scores of 3-0 and both are now behind in their series 3-1 with the knockout blow hopefully soon to follow. It may have been cold and constantly raining but it's still been a lovely week. Larry Brooks thinks these Devils are just not that good. Sure, Scott Stevens is a great player, but his absence alone is about all that's significantly different between this Devils squad who might be ousted in five games in the first round compared to the Cup champions of last season. I personally don't really buy into the idea they're just not that good. There's problems over there, very possibly between Pat Burns and the players. Things are real tough in Islanderland today, many of the articles taking on the theme that they're just spinning in circles as a franchise, no better and likely worse than the team that lost in the first round to the Maple Leafs two seasons ago. Not only that, but their fans gave 'em an earful as well last night with chants of "We Suck" and "Fire Milbury." My smile is so wide I'm afraid my jaw is going to shatter. Read all about the carnage here: I was happy to see the Senators stick it to the Leafs last night. I have no particular rooting interest one way or the other in that series, only to hope it goes the full seven games and Ottawa tying the series at two apiece last night will certainly assist in that goal. To me it looks like whenever Belfour is just average instead of great, the Leafs are exposed as the old and slow team they are. Really, look at that roster. It's like a 1992 All-Star team. Only major story to come out of the game last night besides the outcome was Sundin leaving the game after crashing into the boards in the 3rd period, joining fellow center Joe Nieuwendyk on the injury list. Things are looking sketchy in Toronto all of a sudden. There was also an Avalanche/Stars game last night that the Avs won in double OT to take a 3-1 lead in that series. On deck tonight: Montreal @ Boston, 7pm ESPN2, CBC - Boston leads 3-1 - Rocha Posted by pete at April 15, 2004 04:28 AMeMail this entry! Comments
