Redemption
Tuesday - April 20, 2004
Redemption seems to be the theme today. And while I was sorry to see my boy Andrew Raycroft lose last night, he played an excellent game and watching teams and players overcome the odds and the weight of history is one of the things that makes the playoffs so exciting. Montreal 2 - Boston 0: Well, now that Montreal has finally won the series, I guess it's time I find a Montreal Daily to give us the news. The Montreal Gazette has the first of our redemption tales today, noting that Montreal, who had been down 3-1 in the series, won last night in large part due to contributions from players who had been written off: "What you saw out there tonight was character," Kovalev said. "Everybody played a part tonight. Even though we were down 3-1 in the series, we never quit." Another player who was criticized early in the series was goaltender Jose Theodore, who made 32 saves for his playoff shutout. "I don't know if that was my best game, but it was the most important," Theodore said. It was an excellent game by both goaltenders in my opinion. The Boston Globe has several post mortum articles this morning. Speaking of post mortums, The Rodent begins his post mortum of a Ranger season that was discovered by a neighbor, blue and slumped over in a chair with a needle sticking out of its arm. He also has some thoughts on last nights other big game: Calgary 3 - Vancouver 2: Among the many Flames articles on Canada.com this morning is this one which sees a team defying the pundits to win their first post season series since 1989: So, no shame in losing to the Northwest Division champions in Game 7 of the Western Conference quarter-final Monday evening at General Motors Place. But a funny thing happened on the way to the golf course. The Flames, who had lost 4-1 to the Vancouver Canucks in the season-opener, unleashed their vaunted one-two punch -- Jarome Iginla scores, Miikka Kiprusoff saves -- to stun the talented hosts 3-2 in overtime and bag their first series triumph . . . since 1989. You know I'll be rooting for them in the next series. (Sorry Hurley ;) The Vancouver Sun. (I have little time for losers.) Tonight we have the climatic game of Toronto - Ottawa series and a chance for another team to claim redemption. The Ottawa Sun has a bunch of Senator related articles this morning but my favorite is the story of an owner who brought his team back from the brink by -- get this -- actually taking an interest in each and every game. The Toronto Sun notes that the winner of this series will have to face a well rested Philly team. I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were on the Leafs. Rather, I'd be worried about meeting a well rested Devils team on the golf course. Because they're going to lose you see. Okay -- everybody get back to work now. -- Rightbug Posted by Cliff at April 20, 2004 11:26 AMeMail this entry! Comments
