WHA...T ?
Saturday - June 12, 2004
I was made fun of at the beginning of the season when I expressed interest in the WHA. OK, maybe I was just made fun of, but the point here is that NHL players have now spoken out loud about playing for the new (old) league. The Lightning's Martin St. Louis, who was awarded the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP on Thursday night, said it would be silly for him not to at least consider playing in the WHA. Trevor Lindon - "In '94, I made the mistake of staying by the phone. This time, I think guys will get on with their lives, whether that's playing in Europe, or playing in the WHA, being a full-time dad or going back to school or whatever. I think guys will be more prepared than they were in '94.'' I just remembered that there are two teams in Florida. Hmmmmm. The Daily News say we may have a coach soon - "I'm definitely interested," Quenneville said yesterday. "I think there are a lot of things to get excited about looking at that opportunity." TSN - I don't know where things are going. It is doubtful there is going to be any hockey to start the fall, but I do know this: Never has the National Hockey League been as popular as it is in Canada right now. What a week it was for me. Driving back to Tampa for game seven was a real trip. The lightning storms I watched and drove through were intense and I couldn't help but think it was an omen for the Bolts to win. Once we got to the arena, I was very impressed with the dedication of the Flames fans I encountered. I was also equally impressed by the thousands of Bolts fans who helped provide the electric atmosphere outside the building. Once inside I was able to overcome my reservations about openly rooting for either team. No team will ever replace the Rangers for me....but for one night, I was a Bolts fan. I had seen the Prince of Wales trophy (the photo I took can be seen on the Rodent's front page) outside and would soon see the Stanley Cup. How incredibly lucky I am. The game itself was close to the end making it exciting. To see the Cup awarded right in front of my eyes was awesome. The celebration outside was also very cool. While it lacked the emotion of the '94 Rangers cup, it was still a sight to see. The next day was a return to reality. I had to drive home and my thoughts turned to the passing of our 40th President. The last few days I have been glued to the TV watching all the coverage. Whatever your politics are you had to be moved by the scene of Nancy clutching the Flag and hugging the coffin. So, I'm happy to have been a part of NHL lore.....saddened by the loss of a great man and worried that I may have attended the last NHL game played for quite some time. All in all, it's been an emotional week. ----}- Bird Posted by Bird at June 12, 2004 10:23 AMeMail this entry! Comments
