'Ello. My Name Is Al Montoya.
Friday - June 25, 2004

And you killed my father.

Will the Rangers use their 6th overall pick to select the vengeful Cuban goaltender? Will Montoya even be available when the Rangers pick, given Phoenix's potential interest and Columbus' willingness to trade their pick to someone interested in goaltending?

Whatever the case, Larry Brooks is the first to tell us that the Rangers have been, at very least, looking very closely at Montoya. This article is chock full of stuff to discuss on the messge boards, including this speculation:

It's possible as well that the Rangers are signaling interest in Montoya in order to sweeten offers they might receive for the pick. The Post has learned that the Blueshirts, who also have the 24th overall pick here tomorrow (obtained in the Brian Leetch trade) in addition to five second-round picks, have been approached by the Kings, who select 11th. The Rangers have had previous interest in LA's 23-year-old right winger Mike Cammalleri.

Further, Larry throws in his two cents regarding which skaters the Rangers may be contemplating if they keep the 6th pick:

...They are believed leaning toward choosing either WHL winger Andrew Ladd or North Dakota winger Drew Stafford with their first pick.

Today's Star Ledger has more on Montoya and more from Maloney. Bridget Wentworth is always a good read.

Arthur Staple put down his summer reading (Wigfield: The Can Do Town That Just May Not) to bring us this article in Newsday. In discussing a possible trade for the 1st or 2nd pick overall, the spectre of trading Poti is raised:

The Rangers have the picks. "Those draft picks are most valuable [tomorrow] and Sunday and after that, they drop down to the bottom of the charts," Maloney said. The Rangers have the dough. And the Rangers have a few chips to play from the NHL roster, including forward Jamie Lundmark and defenseman Tom Poti.

(Lundmark's name has been kicking around all week in trade rumors.)

Finally, look at the pretty pictures. Newsday also has this photo essay reviewing past first round draft picks by the Rangers and what became of them.

I predict that there will be another 5 message board threads started on the subject of tomorrow's draft between now and it's kickoff tomorrow afternoon.

Have a good weekend folks,
