Conditional Optimism
Monday - June 28, 2004

I know.

When you have been out of the playoffs and idiots like me have been telling you to hang in there as it will be OK, it's tough to see the light at the end of this ugly, ugly tunnel. But it's there and I have proof. Not Dick Cheney " I know it but I can't share it" proof. Real proof, the kind you can take to the bank.

I give you an optimistic Larry Brooks. Oh sure, he's still filling the column with "ifs" and "maybes" but still, it's optimism damn it and if Mr. Brooks feels this way then why can't you ?

".....honestly, with the type of organization Sather is building, there is no reason on earth not to wait and see whether Larry Robinson becomes available — then with time, maybe this all can work. Maybe Montoya, Korpikoski, Hugh Jessiman, Fedor Tyutin, Joe Balej, Maxim Kondratiev and David Liffiton will become Rangers the way Rod Gilbert, Jean Ratelle, Brad Park, Ed Giacomin, Steve Vickers, Walt Tkaczuk and Billy Fairbairn were Rangers three decades ago."

That's the most positive piece I have read from Uncle Larry in years. Oh, I know what you're saying.....if I can trash Larry's columns before then what makes this one credible? Well, for one, a lot of Larry's writing is credible despite my comments on his sanity. What I'm getting at is that when I spoke with Uncle Larry it was my opinion that he treated the Ranger beat as a prison sentence. To hear even Larry point out that we just might be going in the right direction means that now the most pessimistic can see the light.

It's been a long wait but a true rebuild is taking place in NY. We'll watch young kids lose while learning the game. Then perhaps we'll see them learn to win. What happens after that is the stuff we dream about.

I have dubbed Al Montoya the "Swordsman" in an obvious reference to the character in the Princess Bride. I look forward to the day when the swashbuckling keeper is patrolling the crease at MSG as hundreds of Cuban Americans become hockey fans. Yeah....that would be cool.

The Rodent handles the commentary on Larry Brooks' other column.

Geeze....have we become the All Brooks site, All Uncle Larry, All the Time.

Notice I didn't use the phrase, Fair and Balanced.

Daily News - "Now, you hope the averages work for you," Maloney said. "We had eight picks in the first three rounds. You get four players out of those eight - and they were good picks - it's a helluva draft. If you get six, it's tremendous. And if you get eight, then I need a pay raise."

Journal News - Next on the Rangers' agenda is tendering qualifying offers to their restricted free agents and scanning the free-agency list after Wednesday's deadline. General manager Glen Sather said Saturday that an offer would be tendered to defenseman Dale Purinton. Also this week, the Rangers' draft choices will be brought to the Madison Square Garden Training Center in Greenburgh for a four-day orientation starting tomorrow.

I'd like to congratulate our messageboard member "roast beef" on the birth of his first child.

As I disapprove your negative statements toward me, I thank you for showing Ranger Fans what they should know.

Mr. Brooks,

I will once again apologize here in public for my inapproriate name calling. Comments made by others belong to them, not me.

I don't do that anymore and haven't in quite some time. I do still retain the right to disagree with you.

BTW: I spoke to Matthew Barnaby and he tells me he will talk to the Rangers. This differs from what you published recently.

Thanks for stopping by.

For what it's worth, I suggest that Mr. Brooks and the rest of the hockey world turn their eyes toward (go ahead and cringe now because I think you know what I'm about to say) Ken Holland and the Detroit Red Wings organization. I think the litmus test will be the resigning of Kris Draper and the outcomes for Shanahan and Chelios. I have always found the Wings organization to be imminently fair with their players. They treat them as loved and valued family members.(Sergei Federov being the rare black sheep of the fold.)
What this organization offers these players and what these men are willing to accept to remain in Detroit should set a bar for everyone else. Money isn't always everything. We'll see.
