Doom & Gloom, Part 76
Wednesday - August 18, 2004

It's all about the CBA, baby. The NHL and NHLPA met in a hotel in Newark yesterday (which seems a strange place to meet unless you're deciding where to hide Jimmy Hoffa's body or coordinating a plane heist) and guess what? Nothing! I know, I was shocked, too. I thought for sure they'd settle this silly CBA thing yesterday.

Here's the dope from TSN, as usual complete with 100 comments from 100 dolts at the bottom.

Some words from Mark Everson at the Post. Interestingly, I haven't previously read that one of the six proposals from the NHL to the PA, supposedly the only one without a salary cap, had a provision for Bettman to veto any new contract signed. Wow. Sounds like a swell idea there. No monkey business would take place in that set up, I'm sure. Holy Napoleon!

ESPN's Scott Burnside has a fairly positive take on yesterday's negotiations, at least in as much that they talked, they plan to talk again, and they didn't call each other names in the after-negotiation press conferences.

Last but not Leeds... I mean, last but not least (gives me an idea... what about "Live at Leeds" for a new column title? Y'know, like the Who record? No? Too corny?) Brian has been up to some spy work and bugged the meeting room of yesterday's negotiations. How he swung that one several hundred miles away I don't know, but looking at the transcript it all seems pretty believable. Although, I always thought of Bettman as more of a Revenge of the Nerds fan myself.
