Tomorrow's News Today!
Friday - August 27, 2004

I won't be able to do my usual lazy, 2:30pm news posting tomorrow (or likely today as you're reading this) so I'm getting it done with now. And thankfully there are no lack of links to be had, even at 2am.

Starting "in house", Heather has a new On The Farm that gave me a very weird feeling of time displacement. Reading her article I couldn't tell if it was April or August. Maybe it's just that blotter I took back in High School recurring on me.

The Rodent has a bit on his favorite topic, Petr Nedved's wife, and also a few words on the latest CBA negotiations.

Speaking of those negotiations, let's just get that over with now...

I'd like to go into more depth on Bill Daly's comments in this TSN article, but this page is looking long enough already. Suffice it to say his rhetoric is absolutely astounding. He blames the PA for trying to force a lockout. A LOCKOUT is enacted by the league, not the players. "Take our salary cap or else"? Also, check out this slick little turn of phrase here:

"They're [the NHLPA] doing everything possible to string us out to Sept. 15 so as to ensure we're going to have a work stoppage."

A work stoppage implies something a lot more along the lines of workers having stopped working, not that the owners have barred them from working!

The NY Post has a bit more on Daly's heated comments, as does ESPN's (guess who?) Scott Burnside.

Now onto Kevin Weekes. As much as some of us may not want to, you've got to hand it to Darth Sather today as the Weekes contract is - get this - 1 year at $1.5 million dollars with incentives. People were generally speculating 3 years at $3.5 per. Is it good? One year at a million and a half blows the roof off the sucker. It's perfect. He won't clog up the Rangers future goaltending situation, his low salary and the impending free agency makes him eminently tradable if the Rangers so desire and it gives New York a decent goalie to platoon with Dunham while they work on more pressing issues with the kiddies. Two thumbs up.

Here's the NY Post on Weekes: "He already has the flash wardrobe for Broadway." Oh yeah? I can dig it. It'll be a nice contrast to the overwhelming white breadedness of Dunham.

The NY Times: "He is one of two goaltenders in N.H.L. history to improve his goals against average in six consecutive seasons among goaltenders who have played a minimum of 10 games a season. Curtis Joseph is the other."

And here's Arthur Staple from Newsday. It's nice to see some of the old gang in print again.

That seems to be about it, or it's enough for now, anyway. While checking MSGnetwork.com for an article on Weekes (nothing, just an AP report) I did get a big chuckle out of their poll on the right sidebar of the page:

Who's your No. 1 Rangers goalie?

Kevin Weekes 52%
Mike Dunham 12%
Dan Blackburn 21%
Anyone else! 15%

Mr. Dunham has probably made the quickest turn around from hero to goat in recent Rangers history. Not to kick a guy when he's down, but keep saying you're playing well but for those "bad bounces", Mikey. Look where it gets you.
