Gab Fest
Thursday - September 02, 2004

The NHL and the Players Association talked for 16 hours over the last two days and apparently they're talking again today. Which, as they say, is at least better than not talking at all.

However, here's an update from this afternoon from AP that doesn't paint the rosiest of pictures.

Remember last week when I talked about NHL chief legal officer Bill Daly's highly propagandized manner of speaking to the press? It's almost like this guy can't utter a single sentence that wasn't scripted by the NHL's PR department:

"Our interest is in forging a partnership with the players and we've made six proposals toward that end, all of which were rejected fairly quickly and with little critical analysis."

Sure, ultimately their interest is in "forging a partnership with the players," but by the same token you could also say when the mafia visits a massage parlor and asks for protection money, their interest is also in "forming a partnership." Now, I'm not comparing the NHL to the mafia, but really, is it necessary for Daly to utter these obvious half-truths every time he speaks?

Here's Larry Brooks' take.

Enough of that nonsense for now and onto perhaps the only hockey we're getting this year, the World Cup. Glancing at my TV in the background shows Finland ahead of Germany 1-0 late in the 1st period.

The US gets back on the ice tonight against Russia, 7pm ESPN2. Quite a few articles out there on the weak Russian representation in the tournament, like this one from the Post's Mark Everson and this one from Scott Burnside's ESPN... I mean, ESPN's Scott Burnside.

The Times has an article on Gomez and other issues surrounding the World Cup team. I forget where I read it (because I'd certainly provide a link) but word is that the injured Mike Modano will be replaced by Jason Blake tonight, and Brian Rafalski is ready to re-join the team, who I suppose will replace John-Michael Liles.

There will be another report card tonight, so check back around 10-10:30.

Also, the Toronto Star usually has tasty hockey morsels, but you probably knew that already!
