'Guarded Optimism'
Thursday - April 07, 2005

It took a couple of days for anyone from either the NHL or the NHLPA to open their mouth about what happened at the meeting on Monday, but so far we haven't heard anything really that bad.

Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs stated that he is 'guardedly optimistic' about the informal proposals the union put forth. Those proposals were supposedly based on a salary cap system, and may have also linked some compensation to league revenues.

In an article on the same topic, Sportsnet adds that Bob Goodenow and the NHLPA have an unofficial plan to meet with Gary Bettman and the NHL during the GM gathering today and tomorrow. Either way, negotiations are expected to resume next week.

I am really happy that the sides are meeting. This will be the third or fourth time the sides have gotten together since the cancellation of the season, and that can't be a bad thing. I don't care what they are talking about, as long as they are talking.

Al Strachan warns that getting optimistic over these negoatiations is like Charlie Brown hoping Lucy doesn't pull the football away when he tries to kick it. Al is convinced this whole mess will eventually be settled in the courts.

Today the GMs will get together to talk about how NHL hockey will be played and how it will look once the game resumes. They will cover a host of topics, including how the 2005 entry draft will be handled. Most of the talk will surround goalies and their equipment.

NHL Director of Operations Colin Campbell met with eleven goalies yesterday to allow the netminders to express their concern about potential changes. It is only fair to get the players' feedback before implementing measures that would directly affect them. Slam Sports has a rundown on what concerns the goalies the most.

Slam also has a bit on how icing might be called under the new rules. They also have a few articles on these meetings and the possible changes here and here.

The Rodent gives his perspective on why the league might want to go with bigger nets.

The Hartford Wolf Pack rode on goalie Jason LaBarbera's 41 saves last night en route to a 3 -2 win against Worcester. The Pack have won four of their last five on the road. Their next game is this Saturday, as they play the Providence Bruins at home, and then travel to Providence to face the Bruins on the road.
