No meeting this week
Wednesday - April 13, 2005

Despite the optimism and alleged progress the NHL and NHLPA made last Monday, the two sides will not meet again this week. Sportsnet reports that frustration is building around the NHL, as many people want to build on the momentum they may have built up.

The parties might be taking a little time to develop that new mystery concept that was rumored to have been informally proposed by the union. Reports indicate that negotiations will resume next week, and the focus will be on this new economic system that may be a hybrid of some of the other proposals we have seen.

Bob McKenzie at TSN is being very cautious. He writes that Bob Goodenow could just be playing games in an attempt to make it more difficult for the NHL to declare an impasse.

The Great One had a couple of comments regarding replacement players.

"As an organization, we don't like the idea," Gretzky told the Republic. "Those 700 guys are in the NHL for a reason. To go get replacement players is not the right thing to do. But we're just one of 30 teams, and if the league says that's what it's going to do we can't not go along with it."

By the way, the 'organization' he is referring to is still the Phoenix Coyotes.

The NHL and the NBA will be turning over documents about their drug-testing policies to the congressional committee looking into steroids in sports. The two organizations will join Major League Baseball, the NFL, professional soccer, and professional tennis, who have all turned over their policies to the committee.

The Hartford Wolf Pack will host the first place Manchester Monarchs tonight. Game time is 7:05 pm EST. The Pack have already clinched a playoff spot, and have four regular season games left, including tonight's.

And the 'biggest-waste-of-time' of the year award goes to two Canadian beer-league hockey players who are going to court to try and have the Stanley Cup awarded to the best hockey team in Canada. It just fascinates me that people have the time and resources to pursue such ridiculous endeavors.
