Cold water
Saturday - April 16, 2005
So I try to be optimistic about some of the NHL news that was being reported over the last couple of days, and sure enough here comes the voices of reason to throw cold water on the good feelings. Al Strachan says that some of the figurative ice that separates the NHL and the NHLPA has thawed a little, but don't expect a breakthrough anytime soon. He does make the assumption, however, that both sides agree that this mess has to be cleared up before next season. The Rodent kind of rewrites 'Animal Farm' to illustrate the NHL's current labor situation. More cold water from him as well: 'Don't equate civility with progress.' Yesterday I wrote that Gary Bettman was to meet with the Toronto Maple Leafs some time next week, but I must have misread the Globe & Mail article, because Terry Kochan of the Toronto Sun reports that Bettman visited the team yesterday. Everyone was being tight-lipped about what was discussed, however. Spector thinks (or hopes) that next week could be the most pivotal in deciding how the sides proceed into the summer months. He also gives a nice summary of where the negotiations stand right now. The Wolf Pack bounced back from Wednesday's bad loss with a 4-2 win over the Albany River Rats. Joel Bouchard scored the game winner against his former club. Steve Valiquette made 31 saves en route to the team's 30th win at home this year. The Pack finish off the season with a home-and-home series against the Springfield Falcons, which begins tonight at Springfield. If you are in the NY area, enjoy the beautiful weather. Everybody have a great weekend. HDH eMail this entry! |
