No Replacement Players?
Wednesday - April 20, 2005

Just thought I would give a little update on the news coming out of the Board of Governors meeting today.

Gary Bettman was quoted as saying that if there is no CBA with the union, there will not be NHL hockey in the fall, which also means they do not intend to use replacement players, at least not at the moment.

"We will continue to plan for the start of next season with an on-time opening in October, that is where our efforts will be," Bettman said after a four-hour meeting with the league's board of governors. "If we do not have a new collective bargaining agreement, we will not open the season on time."

This is a big step in the right direction for the owners. After threats of scabs and impasses, the owners have apparently decided that their first and best course of action would be to reach an agreement with the players.

I just hope the players, for their part, continue to be reasonable. They may have the upper hand now, but these owners can turn on a dime.

Don't think this means a deal is imminent, or that this labor dispute is resolved. There is still a very long way to go. But hopefully this, coupled with the optimism of a workable system, will prove to be the start of more productive talks between the sides, and ultimately, the end to this lockout.
