Pack Win Game One
Friday - April 22, 2005

After a couple of days of abundant NHL news, it has slowed down again today. So what the heck, I will lead with the Wolf Pack.

Buoyed by the stellar play of surprise starter Jason LaBarbara, who made 39 saves, the Wolf Pack beat the Lowell Lock Monsters 5-2. Alexandre Giroux scored 2 power-play goals, and Jamie Lundmark and Lawrence Nycholat each had 2 assists.

When asked why Jason LaBarbara got the start in net over Steve Valiquette, coach Ryan McGill wouldn't give any answers:

"We've got a plan and unfortunately I'm not going to tell you anything about it. Sorry."

Game 2 is Saturday night in Hartford. Game time is 7:05 EST. Tickets are available, so if you are in the area, get out there and support the future Rangers.

In NHL news, Sportsnet is reporting that the league has set aside 13 dates over the next three weeks to meet with the NHLPA. Bob Goodenow stopped by the NHL offices yesterday, but nothing of substance was discussed. Hopefully, it was to set up a meeting schedule.

I found this little piece in the New York Post today. ESPN recently signed an 8 year deal with the NFL for the rights to broadcast Monday Night Football. The Post's Andrew Marchand writes that ESPN's new property could spell bad news for the NHL. The NHL is going to have to accept whatever deal ESPN puts on the table, which will certainly mean even less revenues than the league has been taking in. Since the NHL has been devalued because of the lockout, there is a chance ESPN won't pick them up at all.

So you want to talk about mixed emotions? Check this out:

Bird has a new Birdcage up. He feels good about the news that the league has eased up on its desire to use replacement players.

The Rodent, on the other hand, doesn't seem to share Bird's optimism.

So there you have it. I am off to beautiful Las Vegas for the week. This is good news for hockey fans, because with my luck the sides will reach an agreement while I am away. But seriously, I will be back next Saturday to continue providing you with hockey news. Have a great week.
