Working through the weekend
Saturday - July 09, 2005

The NHL and the NHLPA are putting in some overtime in an effort to get this CBA done. And not that cheesy shootout overtime either. It seems to be some good, hard-working overtime.

The sides will continue to meet in New York this weekend after meeting for five straight days. Gary Bettman has asked the NHL's executive committee to come to NY, presumably to take a look at the proposed agreement.

Larry Brooks writes that the NHLPA has been reaching out to the NBA players' union for advice on what specific language to include in the document to prevent owners from hiding revenues that are meant to be included under the terms of the deal. Larry also says that a finalized revenue-sharing plan is one issue that has not been agreed upon yet.

Devils coach Pat Burns will not return to the team next year. Burns has been diagnosed with cancer for the second time, and will need the time off to address his health issues. Our best wishes go out to him. Larry Robinson is a leading candidate to replace Burns.

The Detroit Red Wings officially announced that the team will not renew coach Dave Lewis's contract. This might pave the way for former Ducks coach Mike Babcock to take over the Wings job.

Sidney Crosby has stated that he wants to play in the NHL as long as there is a season next year, despite reports that he was in contract negotiations with Swiss club Lugano.

Scott Burnside at ESPN gives us a rundown on what to expect once a deal is completed.

The Rodent starts to play 'capology'. He suggests that salary cap might turn out to be the great equalizer for the league, or the players, or something like that.

The Captain retires: No, we are not talking about Mark Messier. We are talking about the only captain that the Hartford Wolf Pack has ever known, Ken Gernander. After a 14 year playing career in which he set various team and league records, Ken has decided to hang up his sweater and put on a suit. Gernander has agreed to stay on with the Rangers organization in some capacity. There has been recent speculation that Gernander could join (rumored) new Pack coach Jim Schoenfeld's staff. Shame on me for not mentioning this earlier, and thanks to Heather for reminding me.

We are starting to see some of the writers here at Hockeybird come out of hibernation. Brian is back with a new Between Periods. I heard he and Gary Bettman might be having dinner together next week.

Meetings through the weekend = good. I am hopeful that next week will be exciting for hockey fans.
