Lot's Of Questions, Few Answers
Sunday - July 17, 2005
I'm sure you are like me trying hard to sift through all the CBA articles to try and figure out just what in the hell the new CBA says. Portions have been leaked but some of what's been reported has been called incorrect. So, I'll wait until we can see what we're dealing with. In the mean time we'll take a look at the locals and then some national stuff in the way of links...... NY Post - Failure will have its reward for the Rangers — but hardly enough of one in the NHL's forthcoming Entry Draft lottery to justify seven years of lousy hockey. More Post - Success follows success. If Bowman were coach of the Rangers, successful players would follow. We don't know about it yet, of course, but would there be a better way for Sidney Crosby to learn the game than by beginning his career under Bowman? Boy, it didn't take long for Uncle Larry to turn his venom away from the owners and back to Slats. I do agree with Mr. Brooks on this point though.....there is no limit on what a team can pay it's coaching staff.....and teams with deep pockets should take advantage of that. Newsday - The Islanders plan to offer an incentive for fans to come back to Nassau Coliseum this fall. Owner Charles Wang yesterday announced an offer of 3,000 tickets for $10 each for 10 selected games in the first half of the 2005-06 season. A good move by the Isles, I'd expect other teams to do something similar. Daily News - Despite what has been written, no rules changes have been agreed upon. But several appear certain to make the committee's cut and then get rubber-stamped by the owners. Again, I'm going to wait to see what gets implimented before I freak out. Journal News - And next summer, one interesting target might be Tampa Bay forward Martin St. Louis, a restricted free agent this year but likely headed toward unrestricted free agency in 2006. The NHL's reigning MVP has been living in Greenwich, Conn., and practicing in Westchester. "It's always a consideration," said St. Louis' agent, George Bazos. There will be all kinds of players available in the new NHL. Whether it's this season or in the next few you can bet that every big name will come up as a possible Ranger. Yawn. Al Strachan - But right now, for nothing more than the outlay of some cash, they can trim all the dead wood, bring in the top-line free agents and create a much better team than anything their less wealthy counterparts can put together. Al is correct in his claim that the field is not really a level one but it's level enough that we should never again hear whinning from the small market teams. Yeah, sure. The Rodent reports on a possible Martin Rucinsky signing.
Head over to the Birdcage for a transcript of a phone call between Glen Sather and Mark Messier. It's as scary as the image above. Congrats to the free stuff winners; Rich from Farmingville, NY A fifth winner has not responded so we'll give his/her hat to someone else.
