Rangers sign Jessiman & Lundqvist
Saturday - July 30, 2005

Yesterday the Rangers announced that they have signed prospects Hugh Jessiman and Henrik Lundqvist to professional contracts. Both players will have the opportunity to win a spot on the big club this year, although it is likely Jessiman will spend the upcoming season in Hartford.

Larry Brooks writes that Glen Sather did the right thing in buying out Bobby Holik's contract, but may have made a huge blunder by not doing the same with Darius Kasparaitis's contract, and by qualifying Tom Poti, who has been less that stellar since coming to the Rangers.

Mark Everson of the NY Post writes that while Sather was buying out Holik's contract, he also left the door open for a possible Mark Messier return:

"Mark is in a situation to make decisions for himself," Sather said. "He told me he was going to talk to me next week, so I'm going to leave it like that . . . The one thing about Mark is that he doesn't have any trouble skating. He could probably skate like that when he's 50 years old. He's in tremendous shape."

I hope he is kidding.

Sather did reiterate that the Rangers plan to remain committed to a youth movement:

"Our game plan is to try to stay as young as possible and build from within."

Alan Hahn at Newsday talks about the Holik deal and about today's Entry Draft.

John Dellapina of the NY Daily News reports that free agents Peter Forsberg and Markus Naslund might be interested in coming to New York in a package deal.

Rick Westhead of the NY Times talks about today's entry draft, and points out that the draft is relatively deep after guaranteed #1 pick Sidney Crosby. The Rangers have 4 of the first 45 picks in the draft, and will probably not be picking a goalie.

Spector goes over some potential free agents moves.

The Rodent talks about some issues with Rangers prospect Petr Prucha.

You can watch today's Entry Draft at NHL.com. The MSG Network will also have coverage beginning at 12:00 pm EST.
