Draft Party At Leedsy's
Sunday - July 31, 2005

Welcome to the new NHL where about 3000 of us gathered here at Hockeybird and watched as about 75 of us posted on the boards about this kid and that. I have to admit that just as in past NHL drafts I have little to no real knowledge on the potential draftees and I can't say for sure one way or the other how the Rangers did. I'm no draft expert, never have been. I can tell you that the absolute best recap of the draft can be found right here. My only problem is why I wasn't invited to Leedsy's to share in the wonder that is the NHL draft and to discuss politics? Well, maybe some day.

The Rodent tells you what you don't want to hear and yes, it's stuff you don't get anywhere else. " I tend to make a lot of enemies because I tell people - particularly young people what they don't want to hear: Specifically that they're clueless."

We'll look towards the locals first and then hit the road for other news.

NY Post - Yesterday was order and hope. Now comes chaos and uncertainty.

I'll say. With open season on UFAs just about anything can and will happen.

Post Again - You might not be surprised to learn that the bogus story circulating that Brian Leetch will return to the Rangers as a free agent, can be traced back to none other than Glen Sather, apparently the last to know.

Larry's first article this morning is on the Yanks so half of his brain was thinking baseball. You may fill in with your own joke here, I've set the table.

Daily News - Though their greatest organizational need is for skilled forwards, the Rangers used their first two picks to choose defensemen

I'm not so sure I agree with this assessment. In fact I don't see this as a problem at all. If you need a forward you can always pick one up. I'm guessing the Rangers grabbed the best available players who weren't goalies.

Daily News again - On hanging with Lemeuix Crosby said, "I just want to be a sponge." Just remember, sponges suck.

Star-Ledger - With their own third rounder, No. 77 overall, the Rangers went for toughness, taking 6-3, 215-pound defenseman Dalyn Flatt of the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL. Flatt had one goal and 18 assists in 72 games for Saskatoon, and a whopping 237 penalty minutes.

237 PIM ???? Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!

Journal News - "Going into this draft, we felt we needed to get some core North American players into our organization," Maloney said. "Last year we drafted more on skill. This year, we're looking more for core people to build a team around. For our organization to be good and credible, we have to have core players."

There's something very anti-euro in that quote.

National Stuff

First, Spectors asks that you send ESPN a note letting them know about your desire to see NHL hockey on their network instead of Fishing with Fred. I sent 'em one.

Spector also covers all the rumors.

Slam has 342 articles on Crosby the Sponge. I wonder if his best friend is an asexual starfish.

Perhaps the feel good story of the draft is Darryl Sutter taking his own son in the draft at 179, the same spot he was taken in. I have always enjoyed the Sutter family in the NHL and hope we will continue that for many seasons to come.

I'll try and stay by the computer to help track free agent signings but you'd be better off reading the boards if you need to be on top of the latest stuff. Hey, I have a family ya know. Oh....A happy belated birthday to Dad who's been alive for more than just one NYR Stanley Cup.
