Free agent frenzy
Monday - August 01, 2005

Today at noon marks the start of the free agent period for the NHL. Will there be a rush to scoop up all the big names, or will GMs pace themselves and see how the market develops? Will some of the older players find themselves out in the cold, or will teams be able to pick them up at incredible discounts? Who knows what to expect?

This is a very nervous time for Rangers fans. We had been promised a youth movement, but no one would have been able to predict how the NHL landscape was going to change in just a year. Does Glen Sather abandon that movement and try to get this team better for the moment, or does he stick with it and try to build this team from within?

Larry Brooks tries to give some advice to Glen. Larry points out that while it may be tempting to pick up a couple of these free agents, next year there will be a much younger (and possibly more talented) group, including Joe Thorton, Jerome Iginla, and Vincent Lecavalier.

John Dellapina talks about today's free agent season opening. John notes that the NHL wisely moved the starting time back from midnight Sunday to noon Monday.

We should point out that the Rangers have qualified all of their restricted free agents, with the exception of Dan Blackburn.

Spector looks at some of the player movements rumblings in the 'Trade Rumors" section of his site. Please note the rumor out of Boston that says that the Bruins are working on a "huge trade". Could this possibly be a Jagr-for-Thorton deal Larry Brooks hinted at? I'll tell you one thing, Joe Thorton is a guy I would love to see on the Rangers, as he is young and extremely talented, and could be here for many years.

The Rodent is busy as always. Today he talks about line matching, mathematics, and Bobby Holik.

Bird and I will be around today to keep you updated on any major moves. If you want up-to-the-minute free agent news, check in on the boards.
