Piecing it together
Friday - August 05, 2005
The Rangers signed two more players yesterday, adding some depth in a couple of role players who can do good things for the team. They signed relatively young unrestricted free agents Jason Ward and Ville Nieminen. Ward is 26-years-old and Nieminen is 28. Nieminen has been described as an Esa Tikkanen type player, but with less offensive talent than Esa. Ward is a hard working forward with a history of injuries, but he has exhibited a scoring touch at the AHL level. Mark Everson from the Post also mentions that the Rangers have expressed interest in free agent John LeClair. Yesterday I joked on the message boards that it would be fun to see Lindros and LeClair reunited to play on a line with prospect Hugh Jessiman. I would like to stress that I was kidding. One of the top free agents, former Devil Scott Niedermayer decided to take a little less money to play with his brother Rob for the Mighty Ducks. The Devils responded by re-signing Brian Rafalski, and adding blueliners Vladimir Malakhov and Dan McGillis. One of the surprising aspects of this free agent season is the numbers of long term deals. This topic is addressed by the Rodent in his daily rant. You can find a list of all of yesterday's free agent moves here. I'll try to get back this afternoon for an update. I was a little busy this morning. HDH Posted by Jim at August 05, 2005 08:55 AMeMail this entry! |
