Bertuzzi reinstated
Tuesday - August 09, 2005
Yesterday NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced that Todd Bertuzzi can resume his career following a 17 month suspension from competitive hockey. Meanwhile, the man Bertuzzi sucker-punched from behind, Steve Moore, is unsure whether or not he will ever play again. Moore suffered fractured vertebrae in his neck, cuts, and a concussion as a result of the cheap-shot. Bettman also noted that Bertuzzi would be "on probation" during the entire 2005-06 season, and would be held to a higher standard than other NHL players. Bertuzzi has already pled guilty to assault, and received a year's probation and 80 days community service. There is still a civil suit pending against Bertuzzi, coach Marc Crawford, former Vancouver GM Brian Burke, and Canucks forward Brad May. I am not sure how to feel about this. On one hand, I think he should have been suspended for another season, or at least as long as it takes Moore to get back on the ice. If it becomes determined that Moore would never be able to resume his career, then the matter should be reviewed again. On the other hand, however, Bertuzzi has appeared to be quite remorseful. Tough call. Here are a couple of articles that are critical of Bettman's decision to reinstate Bertuzzi. There is a report from the Philadelphia Inquirer that the NHL is on the verge of signing a U.S. cable deal. The report states that Comcast has submitted a bid for a two-year deal worth over $100 million dollars. The company would broadcast two games a week nationally on the Outdoor Life Network. The bid will be forwarded to ESPN, as that network retained the right to match any offer when it opted out of its deal with the NHL. Yesterday was a slower day for free agent signings. The most notable of the moves was the Columbus Blue Jackets locking up Rick Nash for five years at $27 million dollars. The Rodent has a couple of articles today. One is a poll on the Mark Messier issue, the other points out that Jaromir Jagr was consulted about what Czech forwards to sign for the upcoming season. Spector takes a look at who is still available on the free-agent market, and some trade rumors. Bird has "Game Day, Part II" in today's Birdcage. The Rangers still have some roster spots to fill. We will keep an eye on it. HDH Posted by Jim at August 09, 2005 11:01 AMeMail this entry! |
