Today is the day
Monday - September 12, 2005
Today, finally, after a season-squashing lockout that ended in 600+ pages of legal mumbo jumbo, the New York Rangers reunite as a professional hockey team. Today, after months of fighting about a salary cap, players can start to fight for roster spots. Today, we can wonder about the potential of our rookies, instead of wondering about the potential ratification of a CBA. I woke up this morning excited to read something about camp opening. Instead, there was nothing about hockey in any of the local tabloids. I suppose that is to be expected. The Yankees won a nail-biter against the Red Sox yesterday, and of course the NFL opened its season. (By the way, congrats to the New Orleans Saints who won their first game in dramatic fashion, under dramatic circumstances. I hope the victory brought a smile to the faces of some of those people from the area.) Nonetheless, I hoped for a little coverage in the NY media. I guess the NHL and the Rangers are going to have to earn it. While today is the day NHL teams open their camps, today may also be the day the game says goodbye to one of the greatest ever. By now, it should come as no surprise that Mark Messier may be leaning towards retiring. The MSG Network confirmed newspaper reports that Messier will in fact hang up his skates. Sportsnet is reporting that the Rangers will release a statement today formally announcing his retirement. If we hear anything, we will try to give you an update later on. Spector discusses the status of Pavel Datsyuk and Ilya Kovalchuk, both of whom may end up playing the entire year in Russia. The Rodent is away for a couple of days, but he left something for us to read. The Rangers will be participating in a promotion where you can skate with a current or former member of the organization at local rinks situated around the Tri-State area. They will hold raffles and give away prizes, one of which is "Ranger for the Day", where a winner can participate in a morning skate, receives tickets to a game, and gets to visit the locker room after the game. Imagine the update I could give after that? I would probably be asked to leave after I stuck Hockeybird bumper stickers all over the locker room.
