That's more like it
Wednesday - September 14, 2005

If you have stopped by the message boards in the last few days, you might have noticed the significant displeasure with coverage of the opening of training camp. We hockey fans have waited a long, long time for some 'on-ice' news. Of course, what little coverage we saw was (justifiably) completely overshadowed by the retirement of Mark Messier. Additionally, even the New York Rangers' website was slow in getting some camp information up.

But now it feels like we are truly back in business.

Yesterday the Rangers had two line combos that could very well make it to opening night. The first had Jagr on the right, with Martin Straka on the left, and Nylander at the pivot. The second line consisted of Rucinsky on the left, Steve Rucchin in the middle, and Lundmark on the right.

Larry Brooks talks a bit about Lundmark, who will have to assert himself very early in camp:

If Lundmark isn't impressive enough in camp to claim the single opening within the top six forwards, he'll likely be dealt rather than retained as a fourth liner.

Brooks, John Dellapina, and Andrew Gross all write about the plight of goalie Dan Blackburn.

Steve Zipay from Newsday talks about how Jaromir Jagr must rise up into the spotlight on this team, as all of the other stars have departed.

Colin Stephenson from the Star Ledger also writes about Jagr's new role on this team.

Jason Diamos from the NY Times on the opening of NHL camps.

Hey look, even the Rangers' website has some training camp coverage.

Bruce Berlet of the Hartford Courant writes about Hugh Jessiman and his chances of making it to Broadway this year.

The guys over at Blueshirt Bulletin have some of their own training camp coverage.

The Rodent expresses some concern over the Rangers switching some players' positions. Rodent is particularly concerned about how it might affect Petr Prucha.

TSN has its 2005-06 New York Rangers preview up.

And for a couple of business items:

Mario Lemieux told reporters that the Pittsburgh Penguins expect to lose about $7 million dollars this year, despite a new CBA, Sidney Crosby, and increased ticket sales. That figure is based on the team making it to the second round of the playoffs. (Don't worry, they are just looking for a new arena.)

Our very own Gabe wrote a new Fact or Fiction, where he discusses the NHL's cable deal with OLN, and how hockey fans are treated as a result.

We are just SIX days away from the first pre-season game against the Islanders. I can't wait.
