Wacky Wednesday
Wednesday - October 12, 2005
Actually, it isn't wacky at all. It is raining quite a bit in New York, and there isn't anything going on. The Yankees are out. The Rangers are off today. We are still four days away from football. Oh well, mama said there'd be days like this. As for news, John Dellapina of the Daily News discusses the power-play, and how the Rangers need to improve that aspect of their game. Rich Chere of the Star Ledger talked to Larry Robinson and some of the Devils about adjusting to the way the referees are calling NHL games. Andrew Gross of the Journal News (rapidly becoming my favorite Rangers beat reporter) writes that Kevin Weekes and Henrik Lundqvist have been fairly solid through the first four games this season. I agree. Speaking of Ranger goalies (actually, former Ranger goalies), Jason LaBarbara won his second game this year, leading the L.A. Kings to a 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Yes, this is the same Jason LaBarbara who was the AHL's 2003-04 MVP while he was a member of the Hartford Wolf Pack. Yes, this is the same Jason LaBarbara who broke the AHL's 60-year-old goals-against-average record (1.59) in 2003-04. Yes, this is the same Jason LaBarbara who appeared in his second straight AHL All-Star game in 2004-05. Yes, this is the same Jason LaBarbara who Rangers management felt would never be an NHL caliber goaltender, and who was allowed to leave as a free agent with nothing in return. He now has 2 wins and zero losses in 2 games with the Kings, and is 3rd in the NHL with a 1.51 goals-against-average and .943 save percentage. Listen, it is only 2 games, but I am just having some fun. We will continue to watch him throughout the season. The Rodent whips out the chalk board for today's rant. The Rangers sent defenseman Bryce Lampman back down to Hartford. Lampman was called up to fill in for the injured Marek Malik for Monday's game against the Capitals. Speaking of the Wolf Pack, we welcome Caldercup0 to the Hockeybird team. He gives us his first article in Calder's Corner. (He even got a button over there on the left. I don't have a button.) Joe Mac and the guys from NY Sports Day talk hockey on their Monday night broadcast. Bird is back from Pittsburgh where he attended the WXXP reunion. He writes about it and provides some pictures in the latest Birdcage. I love the hat and the unbuttoned shirt, Bird. Ladies, try to control yourselves. Tomorrow, the Rangers return to MSG to face the Devils. HDH eMail this entry! |
