Dink And Whistles
Sunday - October 23, 2005

The loss in Buffalo last night didn't have to be. But there it was. Sure, I saw mistakes that will need to be addressed but that's what this season should be filled with. I kind of expected to see losses like this.

The bad penalties need to stop. The bad calls could stop too....that would be nice. The disallowed goal should have counted. And the hit posts....part of the game. Dink.....and it's no goal.

Lunqvist was excellent once again. He's giving his team a chance to win and that's all you can ask of a keeper.

Gabe pens a Fact or Fiction article, this one on Tom Poti who played his best game as a Ranger last night (in street clothes).

The Rodent has commentary on last night's game. "Henrik Lundqvist moves faster than the speed of light. That's the only possible explanation for why the puck bounces off the blur between the pipes."

NY Post - "If the sample is now at a reasonably illuminating 10 games, last night's 60 minutes presented fair evidence of the Rangers' limitations."

Post again - "Sixth Avenue continues to misrepresent the issue. The league is not an innocent bystander here. By refusing to exercise the authority granted by the contract itself to direct Comcast/OLN to make the games available to any and all cable and satellite systems, the league has chosen to align itself with Comcast's Flyers ownership — against the Rangers and against the fans."

Daily News - Renney did concede that he had considered scratching other Rangers defensemen. But he opted to sit out Poti, citing his soft play in his own zone. Poti said he had yet to consider requesting a trade. But when asked if he believed there was an irreparable problem between him and Renney, Poti replied: "I didn't think so, but maybe there is. There's gotta be, I guess."

Well, there is now.

Newsday - The Rangers are either in the first slump of the season or this was a taste of things to come.

Journal News - They lost to the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 last night at HSBC Arena, their second regulation loss in a row and third straight overall. Worse, the team fell back into its preseason habit of taking bad penalties. Left wing Ville Nieminen was called for three of the team's eight penalties, and the Sabres scored twice on the power play.

The Rangers have a nice stretch of days off....time to practice. Let's hope they can regroup as I still like the effort and hustle here. Next up, the Isles.
