Homeward Bound

It couldn't come at a better time. The Rangers certainly appeared road weary last night, falling to the Hurricanes 5-1. It was a game filled with turnovers and penalties for the Blueshirts. It was clear that Carolina was the faster, more physical, and better team. There is not much else to say, except that the Rangers desperately need for more players to start finishing and scoring goals. NY Daily News: Coming off a 2-1 loss at Toronto in which they repeatedly forced passes into high-traffic areas, the Rangers last night yielded more odd-man rushes than they had in all but a couple of games this season. And they reverted to season-opening form in needlessly parading to the penalty box. NY Post: The Rangers looked appropriately weary at the end of a five-game road trip. They took eight penalties and finished with only five shots in the third period, while goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist allowed more than three goals for the first time. The Journal News: While there are similarities between the Rangers and the Carolina Hurricanes, chiefly catching the rest of the NHL by surprise with their early-season success, most were not evident last night. The Star Ledger: But the Rangers were active conspirators in their own defeat, spending much of the second half of the game playing short-handed after committing five consecutive penalties spanning the second and third periods. In all, the Rangers handed Carolina eight power-play opportunities and squandered a fine performance by rookie goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who wound up allowing the most goals he has in a game. NY Newsday: "We made some silly plays with the puck, took some untimely and bad penalties," coach Tom Renney said. "We weren't great tonight. I don't know if I'd call it adversity. I certainly call it a great challenge to smarten up and be a better hockey club." Blueshirt Bulletin gives their take on the loss. The Rodent has a mini-rant for the Rangers.
