Just Enough
Wednesday - November 23, 2005
The other day Tom Renney said that his team was "getting it done", implying that they are working hard enough to earn wins as often as possible. Last night was another great example of how the Rangers worked through some bad power plays early in the game, pucks hitting posts, and Grier hitting just about everything else, to earn 2 more points in a shootout win. To be honest, it probably shouldn't have been that close, but excellent goaltending for Buffalo and several posts kept the Sabres in it. Once again, the Rangers did just enough to win, and they didn't even need Petr Prucha in the shootout. NY Post: The thinking individual surveys the scene and, quite frankly, wonders how the Rangers have gone 14-7-3 without any semblance of a second scoring line behind the Jagr-Michael Nylander-Martin Straka trio, all three of whom scored in the shootout before Kevin Weekes stopped Chris Drury on the sixth and final shot of the competition. Nylander tied the game with 4:14 left in regulation. NY Daily News: On an evening when an inch here or there easily could have added up to his 14th career hat trick - if not his second four-goal game - Jagr settled for one goal but set up Michael Nylander's late equalizer and then buried the winner in a shootout to lift the Rangers to a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres last night. The Star Ledger: "We got fortunate," Renney said. "That's a pretty good hockey club that we beat. We didn't have a great first period, so we were happy to get to the shootout, quite honestly." It is also reported in the Star Ledger that Darius Kasparaitis suffered a broken nose on the dirty hit from Grier that was not called a penalty. The Journal News: "It was sort of a turning point," center Dominic Moore said. "We learned we need to match our discipline level with our work-ethic level." NY Newsday: After a scoreless first period -- Rangers coach Tom Renney said his players were ticked off at themselves for the poor early play -- Buffalo scored a five-on-three goal at 8:10 of the second when Drury's one-timer from the top of the slot beat Weekes. NY Times: Kevin Weekes on having a player like Jagr - "I equate him to having LeBron or Michael, one of the best impact players ever to play," Weekes said, the Michael being Michael Jordan. "I can't see how you can think you're ever out of a game when you have someone of that caliber on your team." The Rodent has his usual recap of the game. By the way, be sure to check out his RealStats down the left side of his page. There is some really cool stuff there. The Rangers will play again tomorrow night in Atlanta at 7:00 pm EST. That's a perfect time to sit back and digest all the turkey you ate, and watch (hopefully) another Rangers win. I'll try to drop by in the morning, just in case there is any news. HAVE A HAPPY, HEALTHY, AND SAFE THANKSGIVING!! HDH eMail this entry! |
