It's New York, It's The Captain, It's The Fans
Thursday - January 12, 2006

With complete respect for my Edmonton readers where Mark won FIVE Stanley Cups, only in New York do you get this feeling.

Former New York Rangers captain Mark Messier holds up the Stanley Cup as his family looks on as his No. 11 is retired and raised to the rafters during a pre-game ceremony Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at New York's Madison Square Garden. I am filled with envy as I could not be there tonight at MSG. I am also once again thankful that a longtime reader gave me her tickets so I could witness Mark's last NHL game. Daria, thank you.

I'll try and come back with more thoughts and a game recap.....but the last hour or so has been quite emotional. Thank you Mark. From me, Hockeybird readers and New Yorkers. Hockey fans around the world will remember your on ice deeds forever. Some of us will remember your off ice deeds as well.

June 14th, 1994 was as much due to Mark Messier as anyone else. Together we will walk forever.

The six winners of the free hats celebrating Mark messier night have been sent emails. I await their responses. Check your mail, maybe you won!

GAME RECAP:

Yes, there was a game. It was a fast paced first period with the home team taking the advantage. But something happened in the second period and it resulted in poor hockey on the part of the BlueShirts. The Oilers took over and scored three straight. It looked bad for the Rangers on a big night at MSG. Then something changed again. Feder Tyutin scored on the PP followed by Sykora tying it up in the final five minutes of the second stanza. The Rangers had found their game again.

Petr Prucha scored the go-ahead early in the third on a fantastic individual effort. But to the Oilers credit, they didn't give up and evened the game with a second short hander. The game went to OT.

14 seconds in, Jagr popped the game winner and all is well in Rangerland.

You know what's next, right?

Beer me. ESB's in honor of the win and the Captain. I will sleep well tonight. Congrats to the winners of the hats. Leedsy will be here in the morning.....strap yourself in.
