Quarterfinals under way
Wednesday - February 22, 2006

After yesterday's games, which I review in a moment, the quarterfinal rounds were set.

As of noon today, the Sweden-Swiss game is turning out lopsided, with Henrik Lundqvist and Sweden leading 5-1. The big guns on the Swedish team are lighting it up, with Mats Sundin getting two goals, while Peter Forsberg, Niklas Lidstrom, and Daniel Alfredsson each have two assists.

The U.S. team is trailing the undefeated team from Finland 2-1 in the first period. Rick DiPietro is in net for the Americans. Mathieu Schneider got the goal for the U.S., while Sami Salo scored an unassisted, short-handed goal for Finland.

Later on, Canada will face Russia, and Slovakia will play against the Czech Republic.

Yesterday, the U.S. team lost to Russia in a relatively high scoring game for the Americans, dropping the contest 5-4. Penguins prospect Evgeni Malkin led the way for Russia with a goal and two assists. Darius Kasparaitis had two assists, and Alex Kovalev scored the game winner.

Sweden lost to Slovakia 3-0. Henrik Lundqvist did not play.

Host country Italy was able to tie the Swiss team. Italy did not advance to the medal round though.

Finland shut out Germany 2-0 to end the preliminary rounds with 5 wins and no losses.

Canada beat the Czech Republic 3-2. Czech goalie Tomas Vokoun was shaky and was replaced by 3rd string Milan Hnilicka. Jaromir Jagr and Martin Rucinsky each had an assist. Martin Brodeur made 31 saves.

The Rodent has a quarterfinal preview, as well as a great guest piece from MHurley that was first posted yesterday.

We'll check back later today with updated scores.
