Jed Update
Wednesday - September 06, 2006

I was just browsing the local beat guys for any hockey news, and saw that Sam Weinman at the Journal News had a little bit more on Jed Ortmeyer's condition:

Although Ortmeyer's agent, Peter Fish, originally said the player would try to be ready for training camp, Ortmeyer said a return isn't likely until at least late November or early December.

Just for the record, I would be COMPLETELY against bringing Radek Dvorak back to New York to replace Jed. Devo suffered from various injuries last year (knee, hip, groin), and was virtually invisible in the postseason games he played for Edmonton (2 assists, -1, in 16 games). He last seasons with the Rangers were dreadful, and he has only put forth one decent NHL campaign since he scored 31 goals with the Rangers in 2000-01. Not to sound like a broken record, but give a kid a shot instead.

Around the league:

Evgeni Malkin finalized a deal with the Penguins this week. The 20-year-old Malkin joins Sidney Crosby and Dom Moore down the middle. This year's #2 draft pick, Jordan Staal, could join the trio as the third line center, though some rumors have resurfaced that Staal could be dealt to Carolina for defensive prospect Jack Johnson. That was a draft day rumor that did come to fruition.

Simon Gagne might not make it to Flyers' camp, as he has not been signed to a new contract. Peter Forsberg, however, is skating with some teammates after undergoing ankle surgery shortly after the season ended.

The Rangers' website has a feature on 2006 first round draft pick Bobby Sanguinetti. I know it is a hometown article, but isn't this music to fans' ears:

Sanguinetti is able to lead the rush like few NHL prospects. He is quick, crafty and imaginative in giving his team opportunities to put the puck in the back of the net. He is also incredibly smart, and his keen hockey sense makes it seem like he is playing the game two or three steps ahead of everyone else on the ice.

Too bad he is still a few years away. We'll be looking forward to see how he progresses.
