Rangers v. Flyers, Part 2
Tuesday - October 10, 2006

It's rematch time. Coming off of that incredibly boring shootout Saturday night, the Rangers look to stay prefect as they host the Brian Leetch and the Philly Flyers.

Well, Leetch isn't on the team just yet, but there are reports out of Philadelphia that they are interested in bringing him in to replace injured Mike Rathje. That was yesterday, which of course prompted John Dellapina to write today that the Rangers are STILL considering bringing him back, either to the blueline or the broadcast booth.

The booth sounds like a good idea, except that Brian has as much personality as a spinach. Whatever.

The Rodent has some commentary regarding this situation. It was funny to me who he heard started the reunion talks. Seems to me this is even more reason why the Rangers should stay away.

The locals all cover different topics today:

NY Post: The Rangers woke up yesterday morning one of only five NHL teams without a power-play goal this season. It's only been two games - two wins - so coach Tom Renney was not yet ready to sound the extra-man alarm.

NY Daily News: The rematch comes tonight. And if Saturday's first meeting of the season, and all eight from last season, are any indication, there will be extended stretches when the Rangers' and Philadelphia Flyers' top-end forwards simply outclass the defensemen charged with stopping them.

The Journal News: With each shot that Henrik Lundqvist turned away in Saturday night's epic shootout win against the Flyers came even more evidence why the Rangers see the 24-year-old Swede as their No. 1 goaltender now and for the foreseeable future. Where, then, does that leave Kevin Weekes?

Newsday: It's only a matter of time before Rangers defenseman Darius Kasparaitis returns to the ice this season. The 13-year veteran, on the mend after enduring two off-season surgeries to repair a tear in his shoulder and a sports hernia, has yet to play this season.

Speaking of which, Aaron Ward skipped practice yesterday because of a groin injury, however Sam Weinman of the Journal News reports that he will play tonight. Sam also mentions that Colton Orr will dress for warmups, and depending on who Ken Hitchcock puts into his lineup, may play. He writes that Orr would replace Ward, while Hossa and Dawes might switch lines, as Dawes would play with Hollweg and Orr/Ward, while Hossa plays with Betts and Hall. Does that make any sense whatsoever? Nigel Dawes on the fourth line?? If Renney wants to dress Orr, it really should be Dawes who sits, this way Colton can play with Hollweg and Ward on a more realistic checking line.

And what did Hossa do to get promoted one line? Score a shootout goal? That's just dumb, and I really liked the way Hossa was falling into his role on the checking line. I would prefer Renney stick with that for a while before juggling things around.

So, it's the Rangers and Flyers again tonight in MSG. The puck drops at 7:00 pm EST. Oh, and I'm not mad at all that the Yankees lost. Really.
