Not much by way of major news today, just a few random articles from the locals. To be honest, I thought something would have happened with the defense situation by now, but as it stands we have the same roster for the weekend. I'm curious to see if Kaspar gets into a game.

Anyway, here's the news:

The Journal News: The more the Rangers push through their schedule, the more their forwards seem to be playing their respective roles . . . Some, such as Jagr or Shanahan, can produce a goal on any shift. Some, such as the third line of Adam Hall, Blair Betts and Ryan Hollweg, might get one every two weeks . . . Charged instead with the less-glamorous tasks of wearing down the opposition and keeping them away from the Rangers' net, the team's third and fourth lines might not need to score at all to be effective. But for the Rangers to be dangerous over the long haul, it probably wouldn't hurt.

The Daily News: That zany Rangers power play was up to its old tricks again Wednesday night . . . "It's wacky; it's wacko," Rangers coach Tom Renney said yesterday.

The Post: Jaromir Jagr is about to reach a hockey milestone that only 15 other NHL players have ever reached. Tomorrow at the Garden. Jagr will attempt to score career goal No. 600 against his former club, the Penguins.

Yeah, thanks for stopping by, Brett-whoever-you-are. They are playing in Pittsburgh tomorrow.

Newsday: If the Rangers continue at the same pace, the 23 points extrapolate to about 92. Enough for a playoff spot? "No," Renney said firmly yesterday, figuring that it will take in the "high 90s" to secure an Eastern Conference berth.

You can find last night's scores here. Nothing too interesting, except that Nashville-Minnesota game in which the teams combined for 13 goals, with 13 different players scoring.

The Wolf Pack try to get their season in order tonight. Bruce Bertlet talked to Jim Schoenfeld about the scoring problems: Schoenfeld said good goal scorers such as the Rangers' Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan get in position instinctively . . . "The coaches walk the fine line between teaching, encouraging and being demanding, but it's ultimately the player's responsibility because it's their career."

Well he's right on the money there. I mean, if these players would just accept that responsibility, they could get promoted to Broadway and get scratched almost every single night.

There is a new Calder's Corner up, and you can check it out here.
