Brutal
Saturday - January 20, 2007

For the first time in quite a while, I was in the mood for some hockey today. It's finally cold outside and it was snowing pretty good the other morning, I had nothing to do all day... let's play some hockey!

Ugh. That was a mistake.

The game was hideous from an entertainment standpoint and the Rangers were largely lifeless. I started out the game sitting front and center in front of the TV, something I rarely do these days. By the end of the first I was watching with one eye while browsing the internet with the other. By the third period I think I glanced up at the screen three times. Hideous. Saturday afternoon hockey, let's see some hard skating, big hits, fights... blah. This league is just in the toilet right now. I wonder when some of the ticket buying faithful are going to start pulling the plug on this team and this league for the rest of the season. I wouldn't be very happy if I paid fifty bucks to watch that.

And the Rangers, here's all you need to know about them - 1:10 left in the game, down 2-1, time is of the essence, and after putting on some decent pressure in the Atlanta zone, the Rangers line skates gingerly to the bench for a change. No fire, no hunger. 1:10 left in the game, down by a goal.

And Lundqvist, goodness. Both of those goals against were awful. Seriously. Awful. But God forbid Sam Rosen or anyone from MSG ever criticizes The Selling Point. That's my new nickname for Henrik - "The Selling Point." This is why MSG and half the fanbase have been so forgiving of his lousy year - without him, there's nothing to be excited about in the immediate future in Rangerland. MSG knows this and they know if they stop treating The Selling Point with kid gloves where they hype up his every save while glossing over his every mistake, the fanbase might start realizing that Lundqvist has now spent more time as a Ranger being mediocre than being good, and their enthusiasm for this franchise might wane a little. Can't have that. We have nothing but excitement and memories here on the MSG Network. And if you don't believe us, we'll tell you so every five minutes.

Yeah, so I'm a little cranky right now. I tuned in hoping for an entertaining afternoon of hockey at the very least and I got nothing except more damn line shuffling and more Sam Rosen posi-spin.
