It's Not You, It's Me
Sunday - January 21, 2007

This heading has absolutely nothing to do with the growing rift between Brendan Shanahan and Jaromir Jagr. I'm actually referring to the lack of a full update this morning. There's really nothing worth reading today anyway. No doubt you saw yesterday's game and you noted the persistent problems that keep manifesting themselves: the special-teams misery, the lack of even-strength chemistry beyond the first line, the inadequate defense, the failure of Henrik Lundqvist to outplay his opposing goaltender. Every news item out there focuses on the chemistry issues -- how something "just isn't right" within the lockerroom -- and maybe even some hints at personnel change. Whatev.

This was a flawed team from Day One. Management did not give them all the adequate tools to succeed, the coaching staff does not properly prepare them on a shift by shift (or even night by night) basis, and the better players themselves are wasting too much time pouting at each other and not enough doing the things that make hockey teams consistently win. Everyone associated with the New York Rangers has done a mediocre job this season -- not terrible, but certainly not great -- so it should come as no surprise that the team itself is essentially average. I can't read any more this season about people being disappointed or confused. It's like you somehow expected more from a team that backed into the playoffs last year, embarrassed themselves once they got there, and made no discernable changes three months later. Whatev.

Enjoy the all-star break. Be sure to write the NHL to tell them how much you love the new jerseys, because they'll be selling them to you next season, whether you want them or not. Oldest story of the week, Lindsay Lohan in rehab, thanks to being rebuffed James Franco, who is now famous as "the actor that rebuffed Lindsay Lohan."

Good night and good luck, Rangers fans. See you next week.
