NHL Winter Classic & XM 204
Monday - December 17, 2007

Hello New York and everywhere else, I'm Bird you're in the Birdcage. Despite the Rangers recent play I am very excited about the upcoming outdoor NHL game up in Buffalo.

Unlike many Americans who grew up playing in indoor rinks, many Canadians grew up playing on a pond, frozen stream or some other outdoor surface. Personally, I played very few games outdoors and seldom skated in any other place than a rink....with a roof and walls. I do admit that the outdoor game was tougher on a goaltender but it must be said, I felt a kinship with all those who played outside. It was cool, pardon the pun.

I love the idea of having a huge NHL event nationally televised on New Years Day. I'm hoping that NBC does a good job broadcasting the Jan. 1st 1PM start. The Pens and Sabres are both teams I can watch with interest (I'll be rooting against the Ice Chickens) and I expect a decent game. A fight or two would be cool too. If ya can't watch it that day, maybe you should get XM radio so you can listen.....which brings me to my next subject. The NHL on XM.

I know, I wrote about this before but it bares repeating. XM 204 rules! This is a 24 hour a day 365 day a year hockey channel. That you can get all the games is just icing on the cake. It's the talk shows on 204 that get me going. Currently I'm listening to "In the Slot" with Phil Esposito. It's a great listen every day. Phil tells it like it is without restrictions and I love when he tells stories from the old days.

Gary Bettman is now on once a week in a call in show and ya know, while I hate hearing his voice, it's a decent show. Try and listen to the podcast if you're into that kinda thing.

While I'm on the media thing.....can the NHL do something about getting Center Ice (and the cable and satellite companies) to broadcast in HD for everyone? I love Hockey in HD but it's the local team or a Verses game only. I'd love to tune in to every game on my set in HD. I'd watch even more games for sure and I'd guess so would a lot of people. Get on this right away Gary!
